Hi! Hope you’re having an Armageddon free day! So you don’t even have to answer this at all if this sounds like a hopeless or pointless ask, but I’ve been reading all these analyses of literally EVERY SINGLE PART of s2, and there’s one thing that threw me off that I was hoping you might be able to give some input or theories on!
Something that’s been confusing me is the significance of the song “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” both as a component of the show and in the actual GO universe. I know they play it during the s1 credits and also as Crowley is driving in s2, but the thing that threw me off was when Crowley explicitly mentions nightingales towards the end. Now it can’t just be something only the viewers hear anymore, but it has to also mean something between Aziraphale and Crowley too.
I couldn’t figure out why this song (or maybe just nightingales?) would be so important to Crowley and Aziraphale within the story itself? Like so important to be brought up in their big breakup fight?? And what does it mean when Crowley points out there are no nightingales singing??? Does it symbolize the absence of hope? Love?? Trust?????
TLDR; Why does Crowley know about the nightingales, why would they be important to the both of them, and what does it mean when the two can’t hear them? Would love to hear your thoughts because I honestly have no clue!
Hiya! I am pretty sure they do hear it. It has been said that their presence influences the surroundings - such as when the Witchfinder General movie plays in the background when Crowley meets Shadwell in the café. So I think them being so happy and together in the Ritz made the Ritz play...
That certain night, the night we met, There was magic abroad in the air. There were angels dining at the Ritz And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square. I may be right, I may be wrong, But I’m prefectly willing to swear That when you turned and smiled at me A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square…
And it was a them and love and hope and happy ending moment and Crowley is saying that this is not a them and love and hope and happy ending moment...:'(, not the right way to go.
where is Shiro?!?!?! what happened to him??!?!?! 🥲🥲
hi! do you think that that small smile that Aziraphale pulled in the end credits right before he blurred away says something like "hah, i managed to infiltrate heaven and now will destroy it from the inside"? or rather "Crowley loves me too"?
Me? Neither? Honestly I am a bit creeped out by the smile... :| (but of course I can be absolutely wrong ;))
Good Omens star Maggie Service teases a cliffhanger ending to season 2 as Crowley (David Tennant) and Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) return.
As Good Omens season 2 nears, star Maggie Service has given a fairly ominous teaser about what to expect from the upcoming episodes, which will see Michael Sheen's Aziraphale and David Tennant's Crowley return.
Speaking about how the season ends, returning star Service, who plays a new character called Maggie, told RadioTimes.com: “Where we end, I think, is so beautifully written because none of it’s tied up in a bow, none of it’s Hollywood magic. It’s real within fantasy - and what is going to happen next?"
She added of the season as a whole: "Neil Gaiman actually said that this season is gentle and romantic. It’s totally the same tone but a different pace and we get to spend more time with characters and get to really properly know them. They, I think, get to know a little bit more about themselves because of the way others interact with them as well.”
Service went on: "I guess season 1 we end off with Aziraphale and Crowley not affiliated with Heaven and Hell anymore, so we see them in a much more human dynamic, in a much more day-to-day life. Delightful Maggie, she has the record shop next to Mr Fell's bookshop. It's a shop that's been passed down through the generations...
"When we meet her at the beginning, she's really sure of her emotions and she's really sure of what she wants. But I think it's fair to say she has no idea how to get it. And, without doing too many spoilers, with her openness of emotions and possibly slightly oversharing with Mr Fell - who she thinks is the kindest man in the whole wide world - the fact that she's done that leads to a bit of entanglement of worlds and stories and mystery and misdirection and all sorts of epic adventures!"
Tennant recently told SFX of season 2: "What’s different in season 2 is, because of what happened at the end of season 1, they no longer have head offices that they have to report to.
"They are in a very different position. Whereas before they were trying to get away with things, now they are kind of free agents."
Sheen continued: "Although sort of fugitives as well. They are sort of in-between. But this amazing life they have created over a millennia, they are now able to enjoy in a slightly different way.
"They are not having to put on a front for their respective teams. There is a different kind of freedom.
"They have always been the only two beings who could understand each other’s position. Now they are pushed even closer together."
👀👀👀 "none of it’s tied up in a bow" oh dear, I hope not much of a cliffhanger
So I'm sorting through some thoughts here as I process where Aziraphale's head is at. One thing that keeps jumping out at me is we get two of the "I forgive you"s after Crowley has called Aziraphale an idiot. This seems like it legitimately hurts him.
On the other hand, back in 1941, Aziraphale asked Crowley to go along with his plan, and Crowley, despite thinking it was a really bad idea, still trusted him and followed his lead.
As Aziraphale absorbed that, we got him at just about the softest he's ever been, incredibly touched and a little disbelieving.
Throw in 6000+ years of Aziraphale having to deal with angels who do not understand earth anywhere near as well as he does condescending to him about the way he does his job.
Where I've landed: Aziraphale's pain and anger after the kiss read to me as he heard "You idiot" (which hit a sore spot), and then translated "we could have been us" [past tense] as "I don't even know why I'm still talking to you, I'm leaving," and then Crowley did that instead.
Aziraphale POV: If I'm such an idiot who can't be trusted to understand things like you so clearly do, then why would you truly want to be with me? You wouldn't.
I don't follow any GO meta except what you post, so I'm wondering: has anyone gone into detail about how the Final 15 reverses Crowley and Aziraphale's roles from the rest of season 2? Specifically, the whole season there's a disconnect because Crowley is desperately trying to protect Aziraphale while Aziraphale is focused on their relationship and taking steps to make it clear they're ~together~. Then, of course, it switches to Aziraphale willing to do anything to protect Crowley while Crowley finally works up the nerve to confess. I just think that's neat.
Augh. You're right and that's so chewy. Crowley spends the season on edge, because he feels the danger they're in, but he thinks after the whole Gabriel situation is resolved they'll be (relatively) in the clear. Aziraphale though, he doesn't feel that this situation is any more dangerous than normal. He doesn't know hell's part in this and he doesn't fear heaven—or, that's not quite right. Aziraphale's just been simmering in a low level of fear coated over with denial since Before the Beginning, it's his normal. I think Aziraphale isn't truly afraid until the Metatron makes him realize Crowley isn't as safe as Aziraphale has been assuming.
Welp. Here's to them getting on the same page in season three! 🥲
Oh. What if Aziraphale hadn't interrupted Crowley, and Crowley had gotten to confess first. And it goes well! Aziraphale reciprocates, maybe they have a real kiss.
And then Aziraphale goes "Oh but I also have great news!!"
