I find that the new girl Facebook group I’m in often debates about the Nick and Jess break up and I’m not confident to say my thoughts there so I’ll scream into the void here.
I think the breakup was valid. They shouldn’t have done it whole hungover and definitely should’ve talked about it when sober and well BUT it wasn’t pointless. Nick and Jess (especially nick) have so much character growth between them breaking up and getting back together that was necessary for them to have.
I think Nick needed to do stuff like write his book and buy the bar but do it on his own, do it because he wanted to and not just because he thought it was what Jess would want (if that makes sense).
If they had written them to break up just for the drama of it all then I think they would’ve dragged it all out for so much longer than they did. The aftermath was emotional but they moved on and got together with other people for a while and I think that was good.
A great example is Nick (again lol) bc he got with Reagan. During the first relationship with Jess Nick was uncomfortable talking about his emotions, he then got with Reagan and it was the complete opposite (they were glorified fwb let’s be honest). Nick realised how much he *didnt* like that dynamic and ended up going back to Jess.
On my third rewatch of this damn show, it makes sense to me and I’m glad the writers did it.
