The conversation Abbie had with Sebastian left her completely drained, not to say overwhelmed. A lot had been said, good things, bad things, revelations… For a moment she went back to the day she broke up with Adler, three years ago and the situation was very similar: there was love, or seemed to be, but circumstances and people were not right.
Abigail felt like she needed a rational approach, one that would enlighten her own mind. Two weeks ago, she knew where she was and where she was going, now, it was all a blur. She could barely tell how she was feeling. So, taking her bag and refusing to become one of those movie cliché women who lay on their bed looking for answers that will never come from soap operas, she took the keys of her car and drove to New Vision. She was lucky Sebastian didn’t work there anymore… or not. Anyway. She was going to see an old time friend from New York and probably the only person who would help her get some different light and approach on what was going on, Elijah.
It didn’t take long for her to get there, she even got to talk for a while with a new Doctor in the place, he seemed kind of odd, but cute in his attitude… what was his name? Dr Anderson… She didn’t have much time to keep on talking to him when Elijah came out of his office and motioned her to come in. She greeted him with a hug and sat on the divan, suspiring out loud.
“Wow, that’s sigh could tell your own story by itself.” Elijah teased with his grave voice as he took his respective place on his armchair and started playing with a stress ball, probably a way to ease his anxiousness.
“If only I could tell you… Wait I’m here to do so.” Abbie asserted with a grin. If there was one thing about her, was that she could be feeling deeply blue, but the snarky, irreverent attitude was always there; that was the reason why many took her real expressions sometimes as mere acting, you could never tell how she really was. Eli smiled and motioned her to start with the background of the whole issue, which Abbie tried to tell with all detail and objectiveness. She tried to leave Elaenia out of her impressions, but truth was, she was developing some feeling of annoyance towards the woman, no matter how much she tried not to think about it, maybe it was the need to find someone to blame.
Elijah listened to the brunette, nodding at times and trying to keep track of the important details. He was used to see these situations every single day, he just didn’t think Abbie would be able to get involved in such mess, he knew she wasn’t a fan of the drama and her being there, meant that she was looking for desperate solutions for something that wasn’t in her hands to fix completely. So, clearing his throat before speaking as she finished her short sage, he started.
“Do you realize you’re just making things worse by talking way too much?” He asked, as Abbie opened her eyes widely, still obediently silent. “Look, I know you, but what I’m going to say might hurt. You’re here for professional advice, that’s what I’m gonna give you, with a little twist: I know you, so I know how you would react. Now listen to me, and please, don’t interrupt me.” He stood up and started walking around the room, still playing with the stress ball in his hand.
“First of all… What were you thinking, woman? Sebastian, is it Sebastian right?, well, him, he just said he loved you and WANTED you. Do you have any idea of how many women in the world want to hear that? I get complaints from housewives, every single day, about their husbands not saying those things. He might not be the most expressive of men, but you should understand that not everyone is as in sync as you.” Eli liked Abbie because she was always in her place, but right now, she was losing all scope by trying to solve something that wasn’t even in her hands.
“Men don’t work the same way as women. Confront a man any watch him go hide in his man cave, silent and unable to articulate a smart thought. You should’ve watched your words, I can assure you, right now, he’s thinking you don’t love him at all and that you’re looking for every possible excuse to not be with him.” Abigail watched him stroll around the room, it exasperated her a bit, but his speech got her on a track of thought. He was right, probably she was too selfish, in the end Sebastian said all she ever wanted to hear, but why wasn’t she feeling accomplished? A sudden feeling of guilt took over her. However, Elijah kept on speaking.
“Now, the guy is confused, I’m not defending him. You know I’m a fan of honesty, and he should’ve done something once this girl Elaenia expressed her feelings for him. But you have no idea about what went on there. Those things take time to heal, maybe he held that hope inside for too long. What do we know? We don’t know anything about them.”Now Abigail felt like a judge, a cruel person who just thought about herself, Elijah noticed this as she was about to burst in a rush of comments, stopping her on her way. “Shhh… I’m not done.” He stopped and took a seat.
“I know you want resolution. But that won’t come if you keep on pushing things. Let me ask you something… In an ideal world, how would your relationship would be with Sebastian? The ideal one.” This question forced Abbie to go back to the wonderful she had lived with him, which was 95% of their history, now that you thought of it. Still, silently, she tried to think of it… Was she idealizing something or didn’t she realized all she had until now. “Don’t tell me. Just imagine it.” She stayed silent for a long time, figuring out how would it be? She couldn’t see it, all she saw were memories.
“In these things, when you really love someone, sometimes is the details that matter. Who cares if people say you should keep it basic? Sometimes you have to dig deep. he might love you, but he’s got some sort of connection you will never understand with this other woman, and that is not bad. You, better than anyone, should know that cutting those strings that tie us to other people is hard and sometimes impossible. There are things you can ask from people, but that’s not one.” Abigail could tell by the look on his face that he was being utterly honest, as much as it seemed to pain him to throw the ice bucket over her. “So you either deal with it and accept it, come what may… or stand your ground, which is also respectable and let things go.”
For a moment she thought it wasn’t a good idea to come here, probably because this was another bunch of information to think about, but Elijah had a point. Maybe taking a look from outside was what she needed and she was seeing clearer now. Maybe it was time to make her own choice.
