read homestuck, most of the hate around it is kinda a bandwagon (or homestucks themselves memeing)
the "::::)" post attracted homestucks because a character named Vriska frequently uses emoticons with eight eyes in the comic
you can still use it tho. spider eyes are cool fuck the homestucks
Ah okay, thanks for explaining that! I was getting confused lol. I’ve heard both good and bad things about it aside from the memes, I just don’t want to read it because I’m not a big fan of the style
Hi Frank! What do you think about the new My Little Pony series? Do you have a favorite character?
A couple of things about the show:
I'm really fond of the fact that it's very explicit in the way it portrays children. It's very much not "look how adorable kids are and have lots of good adventures and make cute noises," etc. Instead it's "look how much damage it takes to raise a kid, how traumatic it can be, how often kids get treated unfairly."
"We don't just mean the kids onscreen, the people who own the company who run it, the people responsible for its production, they are also kind of gross and awful."
"The kids who get to be cute are almost always the ones who get the biggest role, and they are almost always girls."
I also find that the show manages to convey this sense of what the world of children really looks like while still retaining a sense of wonder and fun and play in the same scene. There is a sequence in episode 3 where Twilight Sparkle meets up with a weird-looking pink pony named Snackbucket, and Snackbucket goes on and on about how his dad always lets him take any snack he wants, which is nice, except that when Twilight looks in the fridge, he sees the inside of it is all lined with clear plastic shelves full of tiny candy bars. The show, in its depiction of children, is not going to gloss over the fact that everyone has some candy bars in their room. If I could have a world where everyone's bedrooms looked like this one, I would not object to my own bedroom being like this one — and I think I would feel the same way about the world if every bedroom in it looked like this.
(The show also makes it clear that Snackbucket and other characters' bedrooms are really gross and there is a lot of filth in those rooms. But then, one's sense of what the real world looks like for children is also going to depend in part on what you personally see in your own house.)
Also, though, when you think about it, "I'm a pony" is pretty silly, right? It is sort of like being a human, just with wings. This is never really subverted in the show, but it does get to be kind of silly. It is like someone who is a horse but in the same way that you might say a human can have feathers. And it is fine for that person to be on a pony show! If you don't want to see them there, turn the channel. But in any case, it's not really that big a deal. It's not like someone in a show saying something to a human to be like "wait, what are you, an ant?"
(At one point, the main character of the show is given the magical ability to look in a mirror and see her pony self, a power that causes her to feel guilty and confused and that she loses when she starts worrying about her responsibilities to the world. This sort of thing is fine. The show does it again and again, with other characters.)
And the show isn't so bad that it can't get worse. (The worst part of the show isn't just that the main character gets an "evil sister" who turns into a demon. It's that at the end of the season, this same demon is revealed to be the moon.)
Anyway, I watched the first episode and enjoyed it a lot (the first half anyway). I will probably watch the rest, but I'd probably watch it more if the second half of it was more like this first half was.
