This is not happy I assure you guys.
(Go read theirs its amazing)
--------
Morality was the only one that knew.
He had fought against it, but he understood.
It was Thomas after all.
-----
Thomas had just stepped on the stage when the small boy appeared behind him, trembling, whispering things.
“You will fail”
“What if you forget the song?”
“What if you fall?”
“They will laugh at you”
“Run away from them”
And Morality knew, at his seven years of age, that he would have to take care of that new boy.
-----
The first day, nothing happened. It was just fine. They all woke up fine, ate breakfast, laughed, had fun.
Morality watched smiling, fighting back the tears in his eyes.
It was only a question of time.
He chose the movie that night, and he was glad.
He could cry without being asked why.
-----
“Momo?”
Morality looked up from his bed, smiling at the small, younger boy.
“Anx! What do you want?”
“Can I sleep here?” the ten year old mumbled, rubbing his eyes. “I had a nightmare”
Morality just nodded.
“Of course”
They fell asleep quickly, and they dreamt of a beautiful night sky.
-----
In the seventh day, things started to change.
“Hey dad?”
Morality took a deep breath before he turned, wearing the same smile as always.
His eyes, though, were dull.
“Yes, Anx?”
“I’m not feeling very well. I think I might be sick or something” the younger trait shrugged, eyes focused on his phone. “Can you make me some tea or whatever?”
The older trait had to close his eyes before he opened them again, calming his heart.
“Of course. Chamomile?”
“Yep. Thanks”
He left, and Morality bit his lip, ignoring his closing throat.
They would be fine.
-----
“Mo! Guess what?” Anxiety asked, smiling lightly, and Morality looked up from his newspaper. “You… You’re fifteen, why are you reading the newspaper?”
“I’m a father. That’s what they do” he said simply. “What should I guess?”
“You’re not a father. Well whatever” Anxiety shook his head and sat down. “Thomas is going to a concert! I’m going with him!”
“That’s wonderful” Morality said happily, ruffling the other’s hair. “Have fun. Jump a lot and dance”
“I won’t. But thanks anyway” he said, contently, and jumped up. “Gonna get ready. I’m so excited!”
Morality smiled after the younger trait, heart warm.
-----
Fifteen days later, Anxiety couldn’t leave the bed.
“I think he is seriously ill. Perhaps we should talk to Thomas about this” Logic said, sitting in the end of the younger trait’s bed while Prince changed the cloth over his burning forehead.
“Don’t… worry Thomas” Anxiety said, coughing deeply. “I’m sure this… is only a little… flu”
“Little” Prince chuckled sarcastically, before all of them looked at Morality. “Should we tell Thomas?”
Morality turned away from them, in shock. He closed his eyes, pretending to be thinking but only trying to stop the tears that threatened to rise.
“I will talk to him” he said, quickly leaving the room.
It would be of no use.
-----
“I am a disease”
Morality frowned, looking up at the trait who had just entered his room.
“What are you talking about, Anx?” he asked, putting his book down as the younger trait sat down by his feet.
“I heard Thomas talking about it… I am a disease” he mumbled, and when he looked up, his eyes were filled with tears. “A disease, Mo. A disease”
“You’re no disease” the older trait said, frowning, and pulled Anxiety for a hug, holding him close. “Not at all. You’re family”
“There are pills to destroy me Mo…” he whimpered against his shoulder. “Do you think Thomas will ever-”
“Don’t even finish that phrase. He would never”
Anxiety became quiet, but it took Morality a whole day to convince him.
-----
A month later, and Anxiety could barely speak.
It was Morality’s turn to bring him food. He walked inside the room, smiling widely at the trait as he got inside.
“Well, someone is looking better”
He hated lying.
“N-no…” Anxiety mumbled out, completely paralyzed neck down. Morality sat next to him, fixing the pillows so he could sit up and eat more comfortably.
“Now no negativity with me. You’ll be fine” he said, mixing the soup on his hands and smiling at the younger trait as he looked at him. “I know you will Anx. Just… don’t lose hope, yeah?”
“Mo…” Anxiety mumbled, and Morality looked at him, tilting his head. “He… took… pills…” he tried to ask, staring at the older trait with soft, scared eyes. “I…”
“Don’t… You dare finish that phrase mister” Morality said, putting the soup down and caressing his face. “You will be fine. I promise you”
He saw the lie go through Anxiety’s eyes as they filled up with tears.
“Stay…” he mumbled, closing his eyes as he started crying, tears sliding silently from his eyes. “Stay…”
Morality felt his eyes burning and put the soup over the desk before slowly fixing himself next to Anxiety and pulling him to his lap.
“I can tell stories if you want. That always calmed you down” he mumbled, and Anxiety did his best to nod. Morality smiled, the tears blurring his eyes. “Well then… There was one time when you and Prince…”
And slowly, he told several different stories of what had happened before that he remembered. He wiped Anxiety’s tears without worrying about his own, telling him only the happy stories, sometimes even making the younger trait let out a soft chuckle, or smile.
After an entire day of storytelling, Anxiety started to close his eyes, and Morality watched him.
“Goodnight Anx” he whispered, and Anxiety nodded weakly.
“Good… bye…”
Morality watched as Anxiety’s last breath left his body.
He smiled slowly, before he let his head fall back, smile disappearing in seconds as he let out a dry sob, the tears long dry in his eyes. He cried with no sound, no tears, no nothing, because his pain was so deep that nothing physical could really express the pain he felt.
He fell asleep with Anxiety’s body over his own, and in the next morning, he was gone.
“Hello everybody! Thomas speaking! Well man I just gotta say, those meds really work magic! Please, never forget about medicating yourself. It is really important. You don’t have to fight this on your own”
Morality smiled, rubbing the new tears out of his eyes.
-----
“Mo?”
“Yes Anx?”
“Were you serious when you said you would protect me from anything?”
“Of course Anx. Anything and everything”
“You better. I don’t want you to let me down”
“I would never let you down Anx”
-----
