#SadNews A former child actress who starred in the Oscar-nominated 2012 movie Beasts of the Southern Wild was shot dead in #NewOrleans while sitting in a car with a man who police suspect was the gunman's intended target. The late Louisiana native #JonshelAlexander, 22, played a supporting role in the acclaimed film that had been directed by Benh Zeitlin in her home state. Alexander did not appear in any other movies and worked as a restaurant hostess to support her baby daughter. According to police, Alexander and an unnamed man were sitting together in a car in the 1500 block of North Claiborne Avenue at around 9pm on Saturday when a masked gunman opened fire and then fled. Paramedics who were called to the scene pronounced Alexander dead. The man she was with suffered a gunshot wound as well but was able to drive himself to a hospital for treatment. Police have released photos showing a person of interest in a blue ski mask standing next to a maroon pickup truck. That vehicle has since been found torched miles away from the crime scene. Shelley Alexander, Jonshel's mother, told the station WWL that she initially heard it was just her daughter's friend who had been shot, but when she could not reach her daughter by phone, she knew something was awry. 'So when I got the phone call, I just dropped to my knees. I didn't know what to think, Shelley said. Jonshel's father, Johnny Alexander, was at work when he got the tragic new. 'Right then and there I just froze,' he said. 'I just stood still for like two hours. I couldn't do anything. Because that was my #babygirl.' At age 12, Alexander played the character Joy Strong in #BeastOfTheSouthernWild, a drama filmed near Houma recounting the story of a poor Louisiana #bayou community struggling for survival. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the #SundanceFilmFestival and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Asked and answered, Anon. And no, it's not common knowledge. Scroll through my recent posts and you'll find my answer. But you won't hear the details from me since my one degree of separation source asked me not to post the details. But apparently, there is a Facebook post referencing it, so if you search around or ask others you can probably find it. I'm sure at some point it will come out more publicly and then you'll know. #SadNews Suzzanne Douglas who played in some pivotal roles in the 90’s including starring opposite Robert Townsend in his hit show ‘The Parent Hood’ and movies ‘Tap,’ ‘Jason’s Lyric’ and ‘Stella Got Her Groove Back,’ has passed, according to several news outlets. Most recently the venerable actress played in Netflix’s, ‘When They See Us.’ The former child actress Reagan Gomez who played Douglas’ daughter Zaria Peterson in The Parent Hood sitcom tweeted out pictures of the two together, seemingly confirming Douglas’ death. The news broke on July 6 and made its way around the internet. Douglas’ cousin named Angie Tee wrote: “A beautiful and talented actress made her transition today. She warmed our hearts on movie screens and television sets all over the world. This beautiful soul was my cousin. She continued: “I can remember growing up, there weren’t very many Black actresses who had starring roles but there was my cousin with the lead role in Tap starring alongside great dancers such as Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. She also performed with Angela Bassett and Whoopi Goldberg in How Stella Got Her Groove Back. The Inkwell, Jason’s Lyric and so much more the list goes on.
