Honestly this is a tiny vent but no triggering stuff so don't worry friends!
I follow people who have content I both like and dislike. Opinions I agree with and disagree with. Sometimes I come across something from them and I go 'oh I don't really like that too much' and consider unfollowing. Then I stop, and realise that I don't want to create an echo chamber on my blog.
It's important to understand that you control what you consume on the internet. Sometimes you see things accidentally or without wanting to, and that can be unavoidable at times. However, in most circumstances it is your job to control what you consume. Don't make it other people's jobs to cater to you.
Don't like someone? Block them
Don't enjoy hearing about something that upsets you? Block the tag, or the person
It can sometimes feel bad to block someone but when it comes down to it, you are looking after yourself.
I don't want to miss out on the content I do enjoy from these people, and so I don't unfollow them. I make the conscious choice to see the content of their page, both good and bad. I might not personally agree with some of the things they post but, if they are not harmful or hateful ideologies or posts then I think it is good to see them. Seeing differing ideas and veiwpoints help to grow you as a person when consumed in a safe way.
Echo chambers are a huge problem online, and especially on Tumblr, and I'm making consistent efforts to not block myself away from different views and opinions. If it is something that personally upsets me to the point I need to block them, then so be it. That's my job as a conscious and responsible user of the internet.
Long story short, don't hold others accountable for your time on the internet, don't feel bad for blocking people and try to avoid creating an echo chamber!
