happy aro awareness week let's destroy amatonormativity in the near future
Why I say celibate and not virgin
One of the parts of being ace means people ask questions about your sex life. As a sex repulsed ace, I either make a conscious choice to avoid the question, lecture about why it is inappropriate, or specify that I am celibate. And I want to talk about why I choose the word "celibate" over the word "virgin" when both apply.
First, many people seem to associate "virgin" with "victim." You haven't had sex so you are lacking something in your life. As my friend pointed out, it is also often attached to the word "yet." I haven't had sex yet. "Celibate" is a choice. It is showing I have control over my life. I am consciously making that word choice so people understand I am not a victim and content with my lifestyle.
Second, "virgin" gives background to my pass, and again, people make assumptions that I wanted or want to have sex and was turned down or never given an opportunity. Celibate looks towards the future, as well as the present. It doesn't tell people more details about my life.
Third, "virgin" implies youth and childlike, which also implies lack of knowledge and experience. Innocence. "Celibate" does not have those connotations. It is a word about adults, who understand what they want in life. And I do, well in this regard anyways lol.
Words have power. Embrace them, and use them to your advantage, to further your life along and provide control where you can.
Funny how I’ve met lots and lots of ace people who don’t have a tumblr account...some who don’t even know what it is...and yet I’ve never met an exclusionist who didn’t have a tumblr account...or didn’t become an exclusionist until they got one....it’s almost like...the ace community has been around for decades and exclusionism got its real rise on tumblr. But maybe that’s just me.
