What kind of flowers are these? They are Saffron crocus (Crocus sativus), which bloom in autumn. Their stigmas (the long, orange thingies) are removed and dried to make saffron, that expensive spice. Bizarre and beautiful, yes?

Why are the bois so tol?

Those are saffron crocus, being grown indoors because it's too cold outside even for a crocus. The tallest one is 9" and the shortest one is still over what I'd expect a crocus to be.

Tiny fence is discouragement for my herbicidal cat.
