Dark Future~
@marquis1305, you said you wanted to read this, no?
I lay on the cold stone that soothed only some of my aches. When Dorian said that time magic was the cause of the chaos, I didn’t quite believe him. But I trusted him, even if he is from Tevinter. In my experience, Tevinter is the ass end of all nightmares and they know it. They may not admit it but they know it. Even through all I had seen I never thought that this future could be possible. A demon army? Red lyrium at every turn? I can hear the small hum from the cursed substance. It was alive, much more than regular lyrium. I could feel it reaching towards me even if it never moved. I had been here for what feels like ages. I haven’t moved since they tossed me here. I could feel the pangs of hunger gnaw at my stomach. My throat was too dry to speak or even swallow.
It was a few days, maybe hours, later when the door opened and two red templars shoved their way into the chamber. They were carrying was looked to be a human but I couldn’t tell past all the cloth and blood. Red lyrium festered from one side. As they dragged the thing past me some cloth fell away and certainly human. It was as if a stone had fallen into the pit of my stomach. Time itself slowed to a crawl as I took in her features. For once the beast fell silent against its cage, shrinking away from what it saw. I had hoped she was far away from here, maybe back to Antiva. Anywhere but here. She was barely conscious as they dragged her across the floor.
You would have thought that when her eyes focused on me they would light up or she’d say my name, but she just stared at me with a blank expression. She had given up. My Josie, who can negotiate any dignitary to see her side and agree, weaving through any conversation and directing its path to her favor. Now, she didn’t speak as they hooked a chain to her cuffs. She didn’t move as they lifted her to hang in the air like a puppet on strings. She didn’t do a thing as the rest of the cloth fell dropped heavily to the ground soaked in her blood. All she did was stare dully into my eyes. I never looked away, I didn’t let myself look away. Anger started to boil beneath my skin. Fear soaked my mind. Her pain echoed through the chamber deafeningly loud. It rang in my ears and danced across my flesh.
I knew she didn’t wish to speak and I didn’t trust my voice, so I opened my mind to her and immediately I heard her voice. It wasn’t distorted like my companion’s. It was normal, albeit broken. It was dead and pleading.
End it.
My blood ran like ice, cooling my anger and replacing it with horror. A mercy kill.
I couldn’t refuse her. I know that. But to kill her? Even in this future?
Please, Saturn.
I cared too much to deny her this, even if I wished it was not so. This future shouldn’t exist.
“I won’t let this happen again. I promise.” I felt relief fill her mind, settling the hum of the lyrium and calming the pain.
Closing my eyes, I readied myself. I gathered my mana and chilled the room, willing frost to form along the stone and the chains around our wrists. An ice spike formed above me and I steeled myself.
I released the charging spell, ending her suffering. Her gasp made my stomach twist, making me nauseous. I snapped my eyes open and all at once I hardened the frost on our chains, filling the cracks with ice and I scrambled to my feet, snapping our chains. I caught her as she fell, pulling her as close as I possibly could as her life left her.
“I am so sorry that this happened, Josie. I swear I will never let this happen. I won’t give up. Never again. I will never let them get to you or anyone again.”
Thank you.
Tears flooded my eyes, blinding me. A sob ripped through my throat and I buried my head into her hair, trying to memorize this moment, because I made a promise. I clung to her limp frame knowing I had so very little time left. She heaved one last shuddering breath and as she exhaled I whispered my confession to her hoping she could still hear me. She needed to know.
I pulled back and shock rippled through me. Her eyes were half closed and the smallest hint of a smile played across her lips. She looked at peace.
I laid her down as gently as I could as I tried to steady my breathing. I closed her eyes with the human’s prayer on my lips,
“May you return to the Maker’s side, Josephine Montilyet. May you find peace after this darkness.”
I rose to my feet and as I turned to leave I set the room ablaze, leaving nothing behind.
“May those who hurt you never see me coming.”
And they never did.
