Sonic Utopia - Underwater (Green Hill Zone) at SAGE 2016.
GG, GMate.
So months back, I wanted to make my own video game. I had all these level ideas, characters designed, a story (of questionable quality...), problem is I had to make a lot of my own coding if I wanted it to go anywhere, and i don't have enough knowledge of that sort of thing to get that going. Game Maker Studio then began gathering dust. And now GMate comes along. Like magic, I have functioning Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, slopes, platforms, backgrounds, enemies, Rings, Shields, Water, springs and bumpers and flippers and conveyor belts and Chaos Emeralds, Eggman and his swingy ball, loops and just about all I could ask for to get a Sonic fangame to work. I know enough about how to work these sprites to design levels with this stuff. It will be... amateurish, at first, but I think I can use this and my old ideas to design even more stages than just the Boardwalk Park Zone stuck in my head for MONTHS. when I have it all looking clean, I'll show off screenshots of it. I'm excited.
Incursion
Another UDK one, a 2.5 game demo with 4 acts but I only saw the first two cuz that boss fight is broken, even with how simple it is. The controls feel a little floaty and the graphics feel like a weird blend between early PS2 games, early PC realistic games, and Secret Rings. Playing as Metal Sonic trades the Spin Dash for the Homing Attack, and it was something.
FTS
FTS feels very unfinished. It's like that Dreams Collection thing from a while back, but characters are stuck in the T pose the whole time. Slopes don't work right either and i clipped through things a number of times. The level was a purple textureless Spring Yard Zone Act 1 with the typical Modern Sonic objects like springs and launch rings and speed boosters. It needs work.
Sonic and Tails!
This one is pretty simple, ya got Sonic with his CD moveset, Tails is following ya, you go fast and platform around, typical Sonic standard, nothing obviously bad to say about this one.
Round 7
I dunno what else to say other than that this is the special stages of CD (maybe new layouts I dunno) but running faster and on a better engine. Controls better than the original, definitely.
Sonic Utopia
I'll admit I was skeptical of a 3D open world fan game after how unpleased i was with Green Hill Paradise, but this one felt just right. The controls, the graphics, the music, everything felt like it should. They had guard rails on the loops, that's genius! It was easy gaining speed and getting the little guy (seriously, compared to the rocks that should be his size, it's like he shrunk.) To go fast was no problem for me, can't wait to see this be a full game.
