The Lizard tried to be too many things, even though it did most of those things rather well: in aiming to show the full breadth of his range as a writer, Jason Bieler prioritized diversity over cohesion and even if the songs were largely quite good the album didn’t totally come together and by extension Saigon Kick couldn’t latch on to an overarching approach or ethos. And to that point, “Body Bags” came in late on The Lizard and was more overtly metal but still alternative in its aesthetic and particularly when it came to Matt Kramer’s vocals: there were parallels to Jane’s Addiction and Warrior Soul and while the hit was a ballad the guys were clearly pushing heavy music in a smarter direction.
