Corpus Christi Parish Inaugurates Children’s Choir
On Sunday the 25th of February, Corpus Christi Parish at Sakumono inaugurated its Children’s Choir. The choir, an effort by the parish to groom young Catholic musicians in theory and performance, began in the latter part of 2015.
Headed by Blessed Yawson, who is also the music director for the Living Choir, the Corpus Christi Children’s Choir showed a lot of promise in its first public performance to members of the church. From an early age, children are taught to read solfege and to follow staff notation while singing common hymns and other liturgical music they are already familiar with.
Choral Music Ghana visited them at their inauguration and spoke to the coordinator of the parish’s Children’s Service, Maame Efua Sintim, who put the evening’s event in perspective. She said that this was part of a larger move by the parish to help children identify their talents which can be used in ministries within the church.
As singing was one such vital skill, the choir provided an avenue for children with musical talent to grow. Since this was just another church institution, she was not certain if there will be public performances outside of church activities. However, there is the possibility that, on approval by the church, we may see the choir perform to the public.
The choir has about 40 children on roll. They sing in SATB, with some support from young adults and some of the Children’s Service staff. Two children have started taking keyboard lessons with Blessed. In time, they could accompany the choir just as their music director does today.
