A freshly promoted jonin he might be but Sakumo still found it hard to gather his courage as he shifted his weight back and forth between his feet, wiping the sweat off of one palm and clinging tightly to the flowers he held in the other. When he raised a fist to knock on the door before him he thought his heart might jumped up his throat and spill itself across the wooden stoop.
Senju Tsunade did not look cheerful as she opened the door. Her blonde hair was in disarray, her golden eyes squinted against the bright morning sunlight, and Sakumo wondered if she had just rolled out of bed. What he wouldn’t give to have been there as well.
“Whaddyawant?” Tsunade demanded in a slurred voice. His sensitive nose picked up the lingering scent of sake on her breath. Evidently she’d had a good time the night before.
“Uh...here!” For a lack of any other better ideas, Sakumo thrust the flowers in to her face. “You’re really pretty!”
Not waiting for a response, he turned and leaped down from the stoop, taking off down the street and hoping she hadn’t seen the burning shade of red creeping up the back of his neck.
Tsunade watched him go with a bemused expression, then she looked down at the bouquet in her hands. How the young man had guessed her favorite flowers was a mystery - probably he had asked one of her teammates - but she could figure that out later. For now she lifted them to her face and smiled, enjoying the fresh fragrance.
Unexpected though it had been, that was the best wake up call she’d ever received in her life. Just for that she thought she would accept the offer if he ever got up the courage to ask her on a date.
