This is it, I’m finally ready to start posting pages on March 1 :O
—– Songs of Serenvale pt. 1 First 10 Pages Coming March 1 ——— Fantasy/Action/Eventually Horror Teen and up probably Casually Queer Cast Chosen One Deconstructed ——— I almost called the first issue The Call Knows Where You Live, but then decided it was too silly. I wasn’t sure if I wanted a cover page, but I liked how it turned out, so my compromise was to post it before the other pages instead of with them, and use it to talk about what kind of story this is going to be. SO, I’ve been working up to telling this story for a long time, and I finally decided, heck it, I’m just going to start. And now, I have enough pages that next week I can launch with a completed first scene instead of just a first page Okay. So if I do it well, it’s gonna get Bloodborne-y. That is, it’ll gradually descend into cosmic horror. If it doesn’t quite work out that way, it’ll still be kinda eldritch-tinted fantasy, and I’ll try again in Part 2.
I’m not super concerned about spoiling WHAT will happen, I think the tension will be better left to wondering HOW it will happen, and what the fallout will be, so here’s the synopsis: Pt 1: Sal Ward, a novice monk, becomes involved in a grand plan to save a crumbling civilization, and is shaped into a legendary hero— or at least, a close enough substitute for one to get the job done. And, the Hero wins at the end. We know this up front. Of course, it's absolutely true. Part one starts at the beginning of Sal’s journey, and brings us up to the final fateful moment when they defeat an ancient evil…but then doesn’t show exactly how it happened, or what the consequences were. Yet. Pt 2: Another young adventurer, deeply inspired by Ward’s now famous good example, seeks to take up the mantle of Hero. Years have passed. The defeat of the land’s ancient enemy is a thing of legend and fervent speculation. Only Sal Ward knows the whole truth. Few know how deeply Sal was changed by whatever happened at the end of part one, or how that day will turn out to shape the course of history. It is around the end of Pt. 2 that we finally see exactly how the ending of Pt. 1 played out. Pt 3: Fallout from the prior two, and the resolution.
I wanted to start out with what is now Part 2— Alaine’s Arc — but the story works better this way, and I like the plan I have now. Basically it’s like this because Songs of Serenvale started out as fanfiction, but I turned it into a fully independent, non-fan world when I realized the story had become very constrained by trying to bend around pre-written events. Unfortunately, that jump to an original universe caused me to also lose a lot of pre-established backstory it was now my problem to replace with original content. That’s Part 1 now, but ultimately writing and drawing Part 1 is going to sharpen my skills a lot. Part 1 is largely for myself that way, but I hope someone else can enjoy it too. It will lay down a lot of groundwork and be experimental a lot of the time, which I think is going to be both fun and challenging.
