TODAY'S FACT IS

Did you know that the Common Salmonfly (Pteronarcys californica) is a large insect found on the west coast of the US and Canada? The nymphs are detritivores, eating and cleaning up a lot of the debris found in the quick rivers they call home. After 3 or 4 years as a nymph, they start to migrate from the centre of the streams to the shorelines where they emerge as orange adults to mate. The emergence of the adult salmonflies is heavily tied to fly fishing, as many fly patterns are designed to imitate these insects.

@unzip-your-guts submitted: A lil guy I found outside of work! I dont think I've ever seen one before here and was wondering if you could ID them, a live in northern Alberta Canada. He had places to go so he was going quite fast which made it hard to get a good clear picture so I sharpened this one bc to me their wings were really distinct.

Sure, it's a stonefly. The wing venation is beautiful! Looks like a giant stonefly/salmonfly in Pteronarcys. :)
