“The Ballad of Judas Priest” Premieres in Germany
- Wider release not yet announced
Metal and rap aren’t so far apart, Run-DMC’s Daryl McDaniels says in the trailer for “The Ballad of Judas Priest.”
“‘Breaking the Law’ is like some Ice Cube shit, if you read the lyrics,” the rapper says of the metal song as Billy Corgan and Scott Ian laugh knowingly.
The 1980 number is the subject of a short preview of the Tom Morello- and Sam Dunn-directed film, which is in the midst of premiere screenings at the Berlin International Film Festival. Information about a wider release hasn’t been announced.
“‘Breaking the Law’ is a revolution song,” Priest singer Rob Halford says as he describes its inspiration.
“You’d watch the news every night and you see all this conflict going on with the pain and the suffering of some of the British working-class people rioting and striking because of their rage.”
Dave Grohl, Kirk Hammett, Ozzy Osbourne and Halford’s bandmates are among others interviewed in the documentary.

I grew up on Rush, Metallica, Def Leppard, Fear Factory, Van Halen, and…
