The Impressions - I Thank Heaven (EMI Stateside)
wrt. Curtis Mayfield & arr. Johnny Pate, 1963.
The Impressions “Choice Of Colors/Mighty Mighty Spade & Whitey” 1969
I’m not sure how I found out about Curtis Mayfield or The Impressions being that I grew up in rural Minnesota in the 70’s and 80’s. Despite Prince being from the big city once you left the metro area the state wasn’t a hotbed of soul or funk music. Or really any music besides a brand of rock that I describe as “Midwest Classic Rock”, country, and hair metal. Somehow I managed to find things to read to point me in the right direction for things that I thought I’d like. And somehow I found a copy of theirs Curtis Mayfield soundtrack to “Super Fly”. I was hooked. Turns out Mr Mayfield was just as busy as Brian Wilson was in his heyday during the 60’s and early 70’s. Writing, producing, and playing in other artists records in addition to his own group’s there’s a wealth of material out there with his fingerprints all over them. And on top of that he’s a major influence on the development of Ska/Rocksteady/Reggae.
This single comes near the end of Curtis’s run as a member of The Impressions (there was one more album after this one). Both sides are very socially conscious but for my money the funkier b-side is the winner though both are excellent!
Every song has a story. Each day you'll hear a great song and read the tale behind it--why it made it, why it didn't, why it matters.

The Impressions - I Made a Mistake (1964)
SAM GOODEN (1934-Died August 4th 2022,at 87).American soul singer. He was best known for being an original member of the successful 1991 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted R&B group The Impressions, from its beginnings as The Roosters in the 1950s.Though often uncredited, his smooth voice can often be heard trading lines with lead singer Curtis Mayfield (most notably on "It's All Right") or his replacement, Leroy Hutson, on quite a number of songs. Gooden also sang lead vocals on a handful of Impressions tunes, such as "Aware Of Love" and the group's cover of "I Wanna Be Around".Gooden and the group recorded and performed until his death in 2022. He was inducted with the group in 1991 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Gooden
“Mighty Mighty (Spade & Whitey)”
From the Impressions’ 1969 album The Young Mods’ Forgotten Story. This closed out the album and is one of the best things ever. The album marked the group’s move away from being just another vocal group to being a voice in the Civil Rights movement. Their frontman, one of pop music’s few actual geniuses, Curtis Mayfield began this move and used the clout he got to start his own label. Custom Records, one of the first owned by an African American, would go on to put out records by Baby Huey, the Staple Singers, and Donny Hathaway, among others. It would stay in business until 1980 following the decline in soul music’s popularity.
The current masters are held by Warner Bros. and the Mayfield, as Curtis passed away from injuries sustained at a live gig in 1990. He died the day after Christmas, 1999, but managed to put out one last album, 1996′s superlative New World Order.
After one more album with Mayfield, Check Your Mind, the Impressions reformed around singer Leroy Huston. After a number of line-up changes, they broke up in 1981. However, in 2011, the surviving members got back to play a tribute to Mayfield and spent a couple of years touring before playing their combination farewell-60th anniversary tour in Japan. Sometimes co-lead singer Sam Gooden is the only surviving original member.
