Now this picture looks much better.
And I think this is the simple and ultimate purpose of Cait’s tweet, as well as why she stretches her arm on Sam’s back -- to have his back literally, to come rescue to him from his mess and to show people her support on him (whatever you call it).
I still believe Cait’s rainbow tweet for Sam’s birthday is innocent and sweet, not a part of some three-step conspiracy to out anybody. Unfortunately, someone is so stupid and self-absorbed that she had to post a copycat post. For what purpose I’m not sure: show-off? jealous? trolling? or just another post to fuck with shippers. Anyway, what she didn’t expect is she stepped on a bomb this time and once again, her IG became a hot pot of some out-of-control battlefield.
I don’t know what’s Sam’s relationship with MM or why he’s with her, but I do know one thing: it’s very fake, because a decent man won’t put his GF through all these abuses and still cannot acknowledge their relationship to stop the rumors. And a decent woman won’t bear all these abuses and still have the man who fails to acknowledge her. Sam had many chances to do her justice (if she is his GF) and end all the speculations once for all, but he didn’t, including this time, he still cannot call off those bad-mouth people from IG without adding fuel to the fire. Why? Because he is unwilling to call her his GF. He doesn’t have the heart to fake this relationship to that degree (and if he starts to do it after my post I’ll laugh my ass off;).
So here enters Cait, who decided (or being asked) to post that photo and follow MM to show there’s no hard feelings between she and MM after that ‘rainbow gate’(lol); perhaps also in hope that things can be settled for now and people can leave them alone. I think if you calm down and read her tweet carefully you can see it. It’s all about Sam. Her body language shows her support on Sam and her tweet is only talking about Sam. No words for any other person, and no tag other than Sam. I think that tweet is not about to out anybody, but an appeal for truce and peace.
If you take a close look, this tweet is kind of bizarre. The congratulation is a repeat of her last BD tweet to Sam; the so-called birthday party is anything but a happy get-together: no party decoration, no happy smiles, no where to see other familiar cast&crew members. Her quick follow after posting it is more obvious. MM is active on twitter for a while and even liked some tweets of Cait before. She never interacts with her. Why suddenly follows her now? I think it’s a last-minute decision.
So above is my interpretation and the one explanation I can accept myself. Do I think Sam and Cait are together or not? I don’t know. And it doesn’t matter to me. Besides a fan of Cait and Outlander, I’m a shipper in the first place because I love the way they are around each other; I love the faith, the affection and the unconditional support they show to each other. As long as I can still see these things, I am OK and I won’t push for more. I don’t care if they have SOs or not. I don’t have to like them or dislike them. As I said before, they’re irrelevant to me.
However, I do feel for all the shipper sisters who are very sad and feel betrayed or devastated. I’ve been there too. I learned my hard lesson from my last fandom. All I want to say is, please do all you can to protect your heart. Don’t invest all your feelings on your CP’s relationship status. Try to have fun and fan the way you can afford. And always remember, it is you own choice to ship, to fan and to engage in. It shall be for nothing else but the sake of your own happiness.
Sorry for this long gossiping post. I usually keep my thoughts to myself and don’t want to talk much about Sam and Cait’s personal lives because I think Cait is a private person. Just this time I have to make an exception, because I feel very sad to see things reaching such a negative point. I hope people who are leaving will find their own peace soon; and maybe, one day, will come back to continue to enjoy the show.

“No,” he said. “That’s faith.”
