Talking with Sam did not go well, and we ended up back in Whitefish. I'd gone out for a supply run and when I returned Castiel was there asking Dean for help.
Crowley had kidnapped and was torturing an angel so Cas needed us to help find and save him.
I'm not exactly in tight with Cas like Dean but I was getting the feeling that something else was up - his excuse that he'd done enough penance and turned angel radio back on felt - well, it felt like a lie.
I went along with the plan to save the angel or the kid he was in - even though I was just so sick of all the bullshit.
Castiel and Dean left me in Geneva, Nebraska to keep watch on the warehouse where Crowley was holed up, as they popped over to Warsaw, Missouri to see about getting some more demon bombs from Kevin.
I spent a lot of time watching a lot of nothing in a cold car but the boys were able to procure the necessary supplies so it was worth it in the end.
Once we had the bombs we attacked the warehouse and got Samandiriel out but as I was running back to the car I saw Cas stab Samandiriel with his angel blade. I hid in the shadows until the brothers came rushing out.
Castiel's odd behavior when we asked why he'd killed the angel - well, it only got weirder. He said that he had to kill Samandiriel in self defense and he gave us this odd story about needing to return his body to heaven.
"I'm not exactly sure what happened but I can tell you boys that half dead little angel was slumped against the car, not fighting Cas at all. Cas stabbed him and is acting weird as fuck," I blurted. "We should go back to the cabin and add that angel warding sigil and figure out what the fuck we need to do next."
Sam looked at Dean, "She's right."
Dean nodded and we hustled ass out of Nebraska and back to Montana.
Once the cabin was warded Dean gave Sammy an ultimatum - he had to choose to be fully in or go back to Amelia.
Sam asked for some time to take a walk and clear his head.
Dean called Benny and told him that he couldn't come help with whatever Benny had asked him for help with - that was news to me because it had happened while he was in Missouri.
I decided not to push and I started making a big pot of chili - we ended that night eating dinner together while the boys watched some boxing match and I sat doodling in my sketchbook.
Our next hunt took us to Farmington Hills, Michigan and a group of LARPers who were being marked and killed.
"How do you mean he was drawn and quartered in his bedroom?" I scoffed as we went to the station to question Lance, the possible perp.
He explained that he was part of a group of LARPers and that led us to the website for the group who LARP for the game Moondoor.
We found Charlie to be the Queen and in the end she helped us by destroying the book of magic that was being used to force a Fairy to do the bidding of Boltar, who wanted to be the king. We stuck around and did battle, helping The Queen of Moons to victory before taking off on another adventure, although that adventure found us - not the other way around.
We'd found a motel to rest up in for a couple days; I'd gotten a bit of a cold while LARPing with Charlie so we'd taken some time for me to rest up a bit before jumping into another hunt. That's why a man falling out of the motel room closet had me ready to jump into battle.
Sam was at the bathroom mirror, Dean was tying his boots, I was packing up my gear when a man in a suit tumbled out and before he could finish speaking a sentence I had my gun drawn on his head.
"Which, of you-" he side-eyed me but finished his question despite me clicking the safety off and taking another step toward him. “Which of you is John Winchester?"
"Who the fuck is asking?!" I growled.
Ignoring me, suit boy asked, "Please, time is of the essence! Which of you is John Winchester?"
I thought, 'Who talks like that?'
Sam answered, "Uh, neither."
"That's impossible," he snapped, "That's absolutely... What did I do wrong?" he wondered out loud.
"Who the hell are you, mister?" Dean asked, moving toward him.
"Not now. I'm thinking."
Dean wasn't waiting for him to think and grabbed him, pushing him against the wall holding him in place with an arm across his chest.
He calmly stated, "Please. I can assure you there's no need for violence. One of you must know John Winchester."
"I'll tell you what – when one of us falls out of your closet, then you can ask the questions," Sam told him.
"Yes, my apologies. Is it absolutely essential, sir, that you keep your hands on me?"
Dean stepped back but I wasn't having any of his shit and I shouted, "Who the fuck are you.
"Such a mouth," suit guy tutted me before turning his attention to the boys, "Gentlemen, in the absence of any and all other explanations, I'm afraid this has been a marvelous, tragic misunderstanding. I'll be on my way."
"That's not happening," Sam stepped between him and the door, grabbing his arm and Dean stepped forward to put cuffs on him.
After a moment of scuffling the boys were cuffed to the chair instead of suit guy.
"Fuck!" I shouted, grabbing the keys and tossing them to Dean as I followed the man out the door.
"How'd he do that?" Dean asked.
"On his tail," I called over my shoulder. However, by the time I made it out to him he was breaking Baby's driver's side window.
"Oh, that was not a good idea my dude," I muttered as I approached the car, attempting to keep my gun concealed.
He was laid over trying to hot-wire Baby, but I'm sure he heard me - if not he sure did when I cocked my gun, pointing it right at his head.
Before I could get another word out Dean was there by my side cocking his gun, pointing it through the nonexistent window.
"Nice taste in wheels."
Sam opened the passenger side door to prevent his escape.
"Yours, I presume?" suit guy asked Dean.
The kindergartner in me blurted, "He busted the window," as if Dean couldn't tell.
Dean shot me a look before dragging the man from the car and back to our room.
Once settled in a chair in our room Sam tested him by cutting him with his knife and flicked holy water on him but got no reaction to either.
He chuckled at it and remarked, "And there with the holy water.'
"He's clean," Sam mumbled.
"I could have told you that," he sassed, pulling his sleeve down over the cut on his left arm.
"Yeah, well, you can start by telling us everything before I beat it out of you," Dean growled.
"I'm quite certain this is all beyond your understanding, my alpha-male-monkey friend. And violence will not help you comprehend this any easier."
"I went to college, maybe you can explain it to me then," I sassed, only to have suit man eye me for a moment.
When he didn't give us anything Dean lost a little more of his patience.
He grabbed his lapel and pointed his gun at the man, "Let me tell you what I understand! Some ass-hat pops out of my closet asking about my dad, smashes up my ride."
"Told you that was a bad idea," I added.
Dean finished his thought, "So why am I not getting violent, again?"
A look of shock spread across his face and he asked, "John Winchester is your father?"
A rattling noise started - Sam and I froze in our spots, eyes darting around for the cause. I thought it was an earthquake at first.
"What is that?" the man jumped up from the chair, "Oh, my God."
Dean asked, "What?"
"Run!" he shouted at us.
The closet door burst open before we could even try to run, and a woman with blood spattered on her dress stepped into view.
"Henry," she laughed as the door slammed closed, "Silly man, you forgot to lock the door. But then spells never were your best subject, were they? Why don't you be a doll and give me what I want? And I promise to kill you and your friends here quickly."
"You know I can't do that," Henry answered.
"You're not a fighter, Henry."
Dean raised his gun but the woman raised her arms sending the boys and I flying in all different directions. Henry tried to move but she held up a hand and stopped him.
"Josie. I know you're still in there. You must fight this," Henry reasoned.
Looking quite smug she chuckled, "I'm afraid Josie's indisposed, pet. It looks like it's just you and me."
Dean took the moment of distraction to jump up and stab her with the demon blade, I scooped up my backpack and slung it over my shoulder.
Josie - or the demon inside of her screamed and fell to her knees - gold light flashing inside her body but she didn't die - instead she seemed to recover rather quickly. Quipping, "Well, that is no way to treat a lady."
We dashed for the car - Henry beating Sam to his normal spot so he wound up jumping in the back seat with me as we shouted, "Go, go, go, go, go, go!"
Dean backed up and sped out of the parking lot as Josie exited our room, we saw the office manager try to flag us down but there was no way we were stopping to chat with him.
We headed to the outskirts of town where Dean pulled over on the side of the road and Henry got out to vomit. He was either car sick or had a weak stomach when it came to blood and gore, or maybe a combination of the two.
Once he got his stomach under control he explained that we'd just had an encounter with Abaddon - a demon.
Sam wanted to know where she came from, Dean wanted to know where Henry came from.
His answer?
"She's from Hell. I'm from Normal, Illinois – 1958."
"Uh, so do we drop this guy off at Glenwood mental hospital and get on our way?" I asked.
Sam scowled at me.
"Just asking, geez."
"I'm not a mental patient," Henry replied, "Everything I just told you is the truth."
Dean grumbled about time travel and Henry asked for us to just take him to John so we could clear this all up.
Dean barked, "I've told you that's not gonna happen."
"Why not?" Henry asked.
"Because he's dead!" Dean shouted.
The ride was somber as we made our way deeper into the case. We stopped at a diner to grab some food.
The boys went up to grab the trays of food and I sat silently with Henry.
"Sorry you had to find out that way. John's a bit of a hard topic for the boys," I muttered as a way of offering this guy something. "They are good men though."
He nodded at me and slipped the little photo he'd been staring at back into his wallet.
Sam asked, "How you doing?"
"I'll be fine. After all, despite everything, I've just met my grandsons, haven't I?" Henry stated holding his hand out to Sam, "Henry Winchester. It's a pleasure."
Sam shook his hand, "Sam."
"Hello, Sam," he replied with the formality that only someone from the 1950s could muster.
Henry held his hand out to Dean who picked up a basket of food and set it down in front of Henry, without saying a word.
"That's Dean and I'm Y/N," stated, throwing Dean a look and getting a silent eye-roll.
"Right, and you're his wife?" Henry asked.
"Eh, close enough," I chuckled.
Henry scowled.
"I'm his soulmate, we're not married, yet," I added, feeling odd under his 1950s judgment.
"Well, this has been touching. How about we figure out how to clean up your mess, huh?" Dean spoke up.
"Abaddon. Yes. She must be stopped."
"How come she didn't die when I stabbed her?" Dean asked.
"Because demons can't be killed by run-of-the-mill cutlery," Henry explained as if we were children.
'Maybe my tattle telling earlier confused him,' I thought.
"At the very least, you'd need an ancient demon-killing knife of the Kurds," he'd continued.
"That's what this is," Dean told him, brandishing the blade that was tucked in his coat pocket.
Henry was shocked, "Where'd you get that?"
"Demon gave it to me," Dean answered. "We've been around this block so many times."
Sam brought the conversation back around to the portal Henry opened and Abaddon - wanting to know if it was still open and if it could be opened again.
Henry explained that the portal was most likely closed now, but it could be opened again. However he'd need some rather specific and somewhat rare ingredients, not to mention at least a week to recharge his soul.
"Wait, you tapped the power of your soul to get here? I thought only angels could do that," I hissed.
He glanced between the three of us, "You should know this. What level are you?"
"What level?" Dean asked.
"Level of knowledge. You're Men of Letters, correct?"
Henry couldn't believe that we had no clue what Men of Letters meant - Dean thought it was some boy-band, I said it sounded like a cult. Henry on the other hand was disgusted that we were hunters.
Promising to show us something incredible Henry gave us directions to a building that turned out to be a comic shop.
Henry was having a meltdown over the building and Dean was just getting more pissed off by the moment.
"You know what? Wait a second, show some damn respect. They are John's children," I pointed out, jabbing him in the arm.
He rubbed his arm and turned his attention to the boys, "You're more than that, actually. My father and his father before him were both Men of Letters, as John and you two should have been. We're preceptors, beholders, chroniclers of all that which man does not understand. We share our findings with a few trusted hunters – the very elite. They do the rest."
"Well, I was trained by the three best hunters in the world, so I obviously fit that description - go with it."
"Who?" Henry asked.
I looked proudly at Dean and Sam before answering Henry, "Dean, Sam, and the late Bobby Singer."
Henry pondered my words and asked Dean, "You're the best?"
"They are. There's only one other hunter out there that we know of who has close to the same knowledge and skills, and he's still learning."
Dean smiled warmly at me before we backtracked to the issue at hand, Abaddon - and how to stop her.
We entered the shop and Sam wondered why Abaddon was after Henry, who produced a small wooden box and explained she was after it. When we asked what it was he told us he had no clue.
Once we made it into the main part of the comic shop Henry stopped and asked for Sam's walkie-talkie, which made me giggle.
"You mean my phone?"
"Even better," he replied taking the phone and holding it up to his mouth, "Operator, I need Delta 457."
"Who are you not calling?" Dean asked.
Henry explained it was the Men of Letters emergency number as Dean took the phone and gave it back to Sam - I just tried not to giggle.
Dean asked the comic shop clerk to borrow her computer - and for some reason she let him. He immediately handed it to Sam to find the location of Henry's mentors.
The Men of Letters were all killed in a fire in the building we were standing in, according to the internet. Henry said that was impossible because there had been no fire that night - just Abaddon attacking them.
As we stood there I noticed the clerk checking Dean out and I kicked his ankle.
"Ouch!" he shot a glare at me and I crossed my arms, glaring back.
It didn't take us long to figure out where the Men of Letters were buried and Henry explained that the one headstone had a different symbol - the Haitian symbol for speaking to the dead, which was a sign.
He made the three of us dig up the grave, and I wasn't overly happy with him, but because it was the boys' grandpa I kept my mouth shut - even when we had to put him back because it wasn't anyone Henry knew.
"Cover this up. Let's be on our way," I mocked him quietly.
Sam chuckled as he took his turn with the shovel.
The boys had a somewhat sweet moment when they realized a song their dad used to whistle was from a music box Henry bought him as a child as a way of helping him get to sleep at night after he'd watched a scary movie.
Dean found the person who'd taken the identity of the body in the coffin and we decided to head that way in the morning.
Sam had been scouring John's journal since we'd returned to the motel and he discovered an entry that told about a demon that John had once tortured that he'd worked for a Knight of Hell named Abaddon.
"According to some lore Knights of Hell were hand-picked by Lucifer - they were the first demons," I explained. "I saw it in one of Bobby's books."
"She's correct, the Knights of Hell were the first-born demons," Henry confirmed. "Legend has it that the Archangels had killed them all."
"She must be the last of her kind," Dean theorized.
Henry asked to look at John's journal, Sam slid it to him as he explained it was a hunter's journal. Henry told him he'd intended to use one himself and that he'd sent away for one before his initiation night.
"As a matter of fact, judging by my initials here, this is the one, I believe."
That's when Henry learned that John had always thought his dad simply left the family. This upset Henry, greatly.
Dean got a bit huffy and stormed out of the room.
Part of me couldn't blame him - this changed his whole life - Henry leaving for that initiation that night changed the Winchester family trajectory permanently - they boys could have had very different lives if Henry hadn't left John behind that fateful night.
On the flip side who knew the myriad of other ways their lives could have changed, but I knew Dean wasn't ready for that talk.
We'd gone to the bar, had a couple drinks, burned off some steam in the back of the car, before going back to the motel and crashing for the night.
Sam woke the next morning to find that Henry had disappeared while we slept.
Dean and I went to check the car, or for all we knew he might have stolen it.
"Son-of-a-bitch!"
"What?"
"He took an angel feather."
"Oh shit."
We hurried in and told Sam who started searching online and Dean pulled his phone out to call Garth. We heard the scanner app on the laptop going off - a possible homicide at Astro Comics.
"Well, shit," I mumbled.
"Let's go find Henry," Dean told me, "You find Larry and figure out how to kill this chick," he ordered Sam and we took off.
We found Henry at the metaphysical shop trying to time-hop back to 1958 so he can go back an hour before the initiation and prepare for Abaddon.
Dean and Henry had a bit of back and forth - Henry ending the conversation with, "If this works the way I planned, there will never be an Apocalypse to stop."
"And what if you change things so drastically that John is hurt or killed younger, or you change the timeline so the boys aren't even born? Huh? What if you go to the wrong time or die getting there? What if Abaddon was in your friend for months or years and it doesn't make a difference?"
Dean watched me closely - a look of admiration on his face.
Abaddon called Dean using Sam's phone - she wanted Henry and his little wooden box in exchange for Sam.
Henry wasn't having it, he reasoned that he could just go back and keep this from happening, so he started to activate the sigil.
"So you're ok with possibly killin’ your own grandsons? Magic always has a price!" I shouted.
My outburst shocked Henry enough that he paused to look over at me and Dean grabbed him, putting him in a choke hold. Once Henry was out we loaded him into the car and went to get Sammy.
Once Henry woke up in the car we made a plan for how to slow Abaddon down so we could kill her. Sam not being in on the plan was aghast that Dean handed Henry over so quickly but it was quickly apparent that we'd had a plan.
Sadly Henry was killed by Abaddon - meaning he'd never get back to little John and the timeline would remain intact, unlike Abaddon who was separated from her head after being shot with a bullet inscribed with a demon trap.
She'd be stuck in that head and as long as we kept it from her body that was as close to killing her as we'd get - at least for now.
We sat with Henry as he took his last breaths and he gave Sam the little wooden box - it contained a key to a hideout outside of town.
"We couldn't save him - I think this is one of those set points in time."
"It still sucks," Sam told me.
"I know. I didn't say it made it easier but everything we've done and been through so far hasn't been for nothing. And at least we still have each other."
"We kept our family together," Dean added.
Sam nodded and we set to work cleaning up and taking Henry's body to the cemetery.
We'd head back to Lebanon, Kansas and see this amazing place that Henry had died to protect. It was supposedly filled with all knowledge of the supernatural and warded to the nth degree.
