Athena should have been the main character of Tron Ares.

I know it sounds obvious because we can all agree that jared leto deserves to die but like. Listen to me for a moment.

(This was copy and pasted from the server I rambled about this in at like 2 AM, but I did try to clean up some of the wording so I apologize for anything sounding off.)

I know the Tron movies aren't ones for social commentary that isn't directly related to technology, and they also have that issue where every main character is white; So far, Athena is the one and only Black character with a prominent role in a Tron movie.

But like, let's look a bit further into things for a second. This whole movie is about a program who learns how to become more than just a pawn for someone else. Athena almost gets the chance to go through that arc, but she continues being loyal to her mission even after it isn't needed, and ends up dying at the end.

Athena, from a narrative and meta perspective, is denied the chance to be her own person. She's under the whim of someone who sees her as a weapon. She's forced into the role of being aggressive and stoic, and while I know this wasn't at all intentional, the implications here aren't so good if we are looking at the meta.

So then, what if she was the one to break free? What if she was the one to learn that she can be vulnerable, that she doesn't have to be strong all the time? Why couldn't it have been Athena to finally have the chance to let her guard down and thrive because of it? She deserved better. She deserves to feel happiness and to be reassured.

but unfortunately this movie is all about that ugly ass guy so i guess we can't have anything good i fucking guess.

I have been messing around with the concept of "sticking Moebius's concept art for Sark on 80s album covers" since Tron Ares came out. And I feel like I have already maybe devoted too much time trying to make this look good, but I feel like there is still room for improvement.

I looked up the question I had about Tron Aries, "Why doesn't Aries resemble his user?"

The answer:

In the Tron franchise, programs do not always mirror their creators. While early systems featured programs modeled after users, modern autonomous AI, advanced automation, and proprietary military or corporate designs mean a program like Ares is built for specific utility rather than personal resemblance.

I kind of don't buy the last bit though because most people including Flynn didn't even know their programs were people at all much less people resembling them much less purposely designed after themselves.

Flynn didn't know it until he met Tron and Yori the first time he visited The Grid... hence him calling Tron "Allen" in astonishment when he first met him.. Same thing with Yori.. (Lora)..

(I can imagine the mundane real life reason for it but I'm talking purely in universe/lore stuff here)
