He played with Miles Davis in the ’60s, created loft jazz in the ’70s, and made great music for 30 more years. Will Sam Rivers finally get some respect?

Today would have been the great #SamRivers 98th birthday, born on this day in 1923 in El Reno, Oklahoma, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1947, where he studied at the Boston Conservatory. Up until a few years ago I didn’t own any vinyl recordings of Sam as a leader, only on CD where I have everything he’s done on #BlueNoteRecords and #Impulse from the 60’s and 70’s. I first heard Sam on “Miles in Tokyo” by #MilesDavis which I think was his tryout for the tenor spot for Miles “Second Great Quintet” which eventually went to #WayneShorter. A couple years ago I saw this 2-LP 45 RPM “Fuchsia Swing Song” still available on @MusicMattersJazz website and purchased it. The price at the time was still reasonable as well. This was Sam’s first session as a leader and was recorded on December 11, 1964, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Rivers on tenor, #JakiByrd on piano, #RonCarter on bass and #TonyWilliams on drums. This is my favorite Rivers album as Rivers explained the title “Fuchsia Swing Song” got its name from the brightness of the tune made him think of the bright purplish-red color of fuchsia. The CD of course has a few bonus tracks of alternate takes, but the final cuts on the album were the perfect selection. I’m not sure if #MusicMattersJazz still has any available copies of this classic, but hopefully Blue Note Records will include this in their Classic Series because I highly recommend this piece for your collection. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #3rdStreetJazz #jazzrecord https://www.instagram.com/p/CUPtfvBAftw/?utm_medium=tumblr
