On This Day in History March 5, 1770: Rising tensions between the British and the American colonists in Boston come to a head when British troops fire upon antagonistic protesters in front of the Customs House on King (now State) Street. The barrage of fire, known as the Boston Massacre, by the British troops lead to the deaths of five colonists (some sources say six colonists if you count Christopher Monk). The tensions came in the form of the Townshend Acts which were passed by Parliament on June 29, 1767 and the arrival of the troops to enforce the acts on October October 1, 1768.
What were the Townshend Acts? According to the Townshend Acts from the History Channel website:
A series of measures introduced into the English Parliament by Chancellor of the Exchequer Charles Townshend in 1767, the Townshend Acts imposed duties on glass, lead, paints, paper and tea imported into the colonies. Townshend hoped the acts would defray imperial expenses in the colonies, but many Americans viewed the taxation as an abuse of power, resulting in the passage of agreements to limit imports from Britain. In 1770, Parliament repealed all the Townshend duties except the tax on tea, leading to a temporary truce between the two sides in the years before the American Revolution.
The colonists who were killed in the gunfire were Crispus Attucks, Samuel Gray, James Caldwell, Samuel Maverick, and Patrick Carr.
