IN MEMORIAM: CAROLL SPINNEY(December 26, 1933 – December 8, 2019)
We mourn the death of Caroll Spinney puppeteer and friend of the Antioch Review.
This Caroll Spinney drawing was part of the piece published in our Fall 1979 issue wherein Spinney granted an interview to Francelia Butler (scholar, pioneer & writer of children’s literature) and Samuel Pickering (Fulbright scholar). In 2017, Spinney granted the Antioch Review permission to reprint the piece.
Editor Robert Fogarty observed in his ’79 editorial that “Big Bird is not just a television personality or a celebrity like Miss Piggy, but a figure who looms large in the memory of all those Americans who watched the show while munching a zwieback.”
True then. True today. . . .well, perhaps today we would be munching on some chocolate and chips!
Thank you, Caroll Spinney, for all the joy you gave to kids of all ages throughout the world for so many years!
Spinney’s spunky spirit, wise wit, and lively life lessons will be missed here and elsewhere.
