AWX is pleased to welcome Samurai Dan & Jillian back to Chicagoland!
Dan Coglan, a.k.a. “Samurai Dan” and his wife, Jillian are the acknowledged masters of marital... er, MARTIAL mayhem. This dynamic duo travels the civilized portions of the U.S., bringing their unique show to curious and horrified audiences alike.
In addition to their high-energy, mostly safe stage shows (where razor sharp blades and barbs fly) the couple teaches historical and hysterical panels on the way of the warrior. Offering a wide range of lectures and interactive workshops, Dan and his lethal love Jillian are guaranteed to provide con attendees fun and fulfillment.
Due to a supreme lack of filter, Dan also performs standup comedy, and lives to embarrass his wife onstage, in censored and uncensored settings.
A storyteller at heart, Dan is finishing his third horror novel, and offers insights into the creative process with panels for the aspiring writer as well.
Anyone who goes to cons in the Midwest probably knows Samurai Dan and Jillian. Well, they're in quite a bit of trouble. Any help you can offer would be appreciated!
Please help us recover from our nightmare and continue to bring our unique style of educational entertainment to people across the country!!
Signal boosting this. Samurai Dan and Jillian are two longtime guests of Anime Iowa among other cons. They were scammed by a fake book publishing company while trying to realize Dan's lifelong dream. However it was a lie, and now they are going to lose everything. If you can, please donate. Even a dollar can help them to keep afloat. If you cant, please reblog. They are amazing and kind people, they dont deserve this horrible nightmare they are in
Panel wise we got there on time for Live action Choose your own Adventure, hosted by Rob “Vash” Lewis. Unfortunately they had it in Panel room 5 and we missed it due to the room being full. So instead Lady Nocturne and I went and caught up with the Artist Alley. Some interesting vendors and artist were there, although the number was smaller and there were lest posters then there were crafts, Which was okay, as we later got some cool swag.
Not being sure what to do we went up to the room that was going to host, So you want to be and Artist and caught the tail end of Martial Arts (Well over 9000), which wasn’t too bad as we got to see the host do some damn cool body contortions. The sad part comes later after his panel ended and the host of the art panel never shows. So our Martial artist invites up some people to give tips and tricks as to what to do for art and we managed to cover the whole time period with that. Which was really rather cool that the attendees hijacked the whole show, and it’s given me and Lady Nocturne ideas for two panels next year.
We ended the Afternoon with What is a Steam Powered Giraffe? panel where the band, in full costume, answered questions as the robots and themselves. It was rather informative as it gave me ideas for a story I’m working on. More about them in the review, but the panel was done very well, the fans were nice, and the group was rather humble. They happily chatted about what inspired them, Steve (the sound tech) talked about his end of the show and the creations of the sounds that they used for some parts of the acts. Each person got to introduce themselves and talk about how they got into the band, their roles and how surprised they are by all this. We also got to learn more about the story behind the robots and their creation.
After this lunch at a rather good Chinese buffet not too far from the convention by driving distance. Once lunch was finished with our dad, who was kind enough to come eat with us, we returned to the land of Cosplay and Anime to go to check out Spike Spencer’s Don’t Kill your date (and other cooking tips), which covered a number of facts about the world of dating, particularly for guys. The fun parts were in the fact that the advice was actually damn sound advice, and Mr. Spencer clearly had done his research and studies on how men and women worked in their minds. What was also cool was the fact that we got some good recipes. He got to stay later as Quinton Flynn didn’t show for his Ask Reno panel.
We then made our way to the Mystery Science Theater Anime Style, hosted by Todd Haberkorn, who was being a good guy and had brought his autograph line with him to the panel. He apologized to the audience and explained that the people in line had been waiting four hours to get his signature. So he played Persona 4 for us while we were waiting. After this, we got to see an amusing movie by the Shaw brothers that he dubbed. We learned that the dub actors only had three days to complete the dubbing of the movie, and the flaps are harder to do then with Anime. He spoofed it with the audience so the wait was worth it.
After that we waited and bopped to music supplied by a staff member in the room, till it was time for Cards against Humanity with Samurai Dan and Lady Jillian. This game is the dirty game of apples to apples invented here in Illinois at a High school reunion. Teams were broken into ten and we were supposed to have Quinton as the judge but apparently the wild Quinton is un-trappable. So instead Dan and Jillian had us laughing like crazy with the game as we played it. (I will now be attending their swords and weapons panels next Acen!) This lasted for only an hour due to the rave; normally it went for two hours. Lady Nocturne and I then made our way back upstairs to a panel called, Bad Fanfiction Panel, hosted by Alicia Walker (no relation to Doug or Rob Walker I think). She and her partner went through various really bad fanfictions and had the audience laughing rather hard. Again we caught the last of it, but it was bad enough that we were crying from laughing so hard.
We were going to catch Airship o’Rilley’s last panel on Victorian Nightlife, but sadly Little Lady felt exhausted so we went home. End of the night was spent observing Wedding guests passing by the Rave and rubbernecking at everything; T’was a fun evening.
Coming up Sunday…and then a review on the concert.
