The subject of this fascinating work by Sandro Botticelli was inspired by a lost painting of allegorical theme by the Greek painter Apelles (4th century BC), known thanks to the description of the scholar Luciano di Samosata (2nd century BC).

Description

The descent of the Holy Spirit, also known as Pentecost, is a significant event in the Bible that marks the beginning of the Church of Christ's missionary work. Some say it's the "birthday of the Church of Christ" because the apostles began spreading the Gospel after this event.

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost (Acts 2:2-4)

"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
