Stuff I've done in the last year that I couldn't have done if I hadn't lost weight
I'm 30 now, soon to be 31 😱. Tons of people dread the big 3-0 but honestly this has easily been the best year of my life so far 🤩😍
A 10 mile assault course in the pissing rain and freezing mud. I was electrocuted, submerged in -3°C water and a whole lot more. Definitely the toughest physical challenge I've endured to date, but I made it 🙌.
2) Paintballing (finally!!)
I'd always wanted to do it but I always knew I would struggle and I didn't want to be the slow one. Stupid, as it was all in my head, but I finally did it. It was hard work, mega painful when I got shot but SO much fun!
3) Road tripped round the US by myself
Yes, this is me flashing the Grand Canyon 🤷♀️. I could definitely have physically done this back when I was clinically obese, but I know I wouldn't have because (rightly or wrongly) I lacked the confidence to leave my comfort zone behind me and go head first into the unknown.
4) Climbed to the top of the O2 building
Turned out to be super easy haha. But never would have occurred to me to do it when I was bigger!
It's a shame but I think my weight would actually have been a health and safety restriction on this before. I loved paragliding, it was so serene and the Slovenian landscape is even more beautiful from the sky than it is from the ground ❤
6) Volunteered on a construction project in Costa Rica
I went with a friend. It was hard work in hot sunshine, renovating buildings for a rehab centre for troubled teenage girls with barely enough money to afford food and water. Had the best time and met a few incredible people. Never would have done it before when I lacked the stamina and the confidence.
This was insanely fun. I probably would have done it when I was bigger (if I'd been allowed), but I wouldn't have been traveling in Costa Rica to start with so probably wouldn't have had the chance.
8) Started taking Krav Maga lessons
Lara Croft is my life idol and I've always wanted to kick arse and be able to fight like her. Krav Maga is physically intense, there's absolutely no way I'd be able to keep up if I were still 215lbs. But it's so much fun, I love it SO much and I'm taking my first grade in a few weeks.
So you can do yoga at any size, obviously! But I personally just didn't have the inclination to start until I'd already gotten myself fit. Now I do yoga several times a week and see so many benefits from it. Couldn't imagine life without it.
10) Got engaged (and went wedding dress shopping!)
This is a big one for me. I've been with ny partner for eight years and he always wanted to get married, I didn't. Earlier this year I changed my mind. Not directly because I lost weight, but because losing weight has had a chain effect that has impacted so many areas of my life (see all of the above!) and made me think about what I really want. Before I felt like I didn't want to get married to prove a point to the world. Now I know I can still be a huge feminist and marry the man I love if I want to.
Also, dress shopping was FUN. SO MUCH FUN. It's sad, but it wouldn't have been anywhere near as much fun if I was still overweight.
So thats my list. There's so much more, all the little day to day things I do like running up the stairs when I'm late, clothes shopping with the girls. I enjoy food so much more now. but all of it, absolutely all of it I do for this life-loving rock star right here. I might have been fat but I was still awesome and I'm so glad I've given that awesome person the opportunity to do so much incredible stuff.
