My personal hc about Sanji's family is that Zeff & Sora are siblings. And Zeff was reminded of Sora when he rescued Sanji. And he never knew Sanji was Sora's son.
(also Zeff & Sora being siblings just made more sense to me. And it's easier to write in modern aus on why Zeff had custody of Sanji.)
