SCANA CEO, Senior VP to retire after failed $9B nuke project
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) — Two top executives at the SCANA Corporation are set to retire following the failed VC Summer Nuclear Station construction project.
The company announced CEO Kevin Marsh and Senior Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer and President, Generation and Transmission Stephen Byrne will both step down effective Monday, January 1, 2018.
SCANA is the parent of SCE&G.

Go South Carolina: Doing what's right on the coal-ash issue.

Environmentalists sued Santee Cooper over the disposal of coal ash at one of its coal-fired power plants. But Santee Cooper didn’t just settle one lawsuit. Instead the company instituted a sweeping reform of its coal ash disposal at all of its coal-fired plants. “Nobody is forcing us to do this,” said Kierspe. “It’s the right thing to do.”
Santee Cooper had a long run in Conway at the Grainger electric plant. It provided many jobs, a boost to the local economy and reliable electricity. It also produced coal ash.

Now that the facility is being shut down, Santee Cooper has to come up with an acceptable way to deal with the coal ash left behind. The utility operator wants to create a vault to seal the ponds holding the debris. But that's not the only option.

A circuit court judge ruled Wednesday that a pair of environmental groups will get to question state health regulators about their failure to act on a permit application that could limit the amount of arsenic and other pollutants migrating into the Waccamaw River from unlined coal ash ponds at Santee Cooper’s Grainger electric generating plant here.
