Sarah Carroll’s STAR PARADE
Well, the summer festival season is winding down with the conclusion of the National Folk Festival and we’re all heading back indoors for a little R’n’R (that’s Rest’n’Restitution: take note, you folks who’re always last to leave the party!)
I thought this would be a good time to start looking at some of the independent albums that have come out over the last while and get to know the artists behind them.
A little while back I asked Sarah Carroll to tell us about her latest album STAR PARADE. Recorded at Vale Sound, Leigh Ivin’s (The Re-Mains) independent studio situated up the end of a magnificent granite valley out the back of Tamworth, NSW, the production is lavish yet sympathetic to Carroll’s refined idiosyncratic writing style. Her voice, too, shines on this record. Some of us come leaping into this world with a sparkly set of pipes ready to conquer the ears of the masses. Sarah’s tone timbre and delivery sit squarely at the other end of the spectrum: honed by a life of keen listening, while supporting or collaborating with other singers and musicians, Sarah’s voice has matured into the kind of ripe fruit that artists dream of possessing - considered, compassionate, wise, strong and female, moving.
Take for example the track St. Kilda Skyline - a song Sarah wrote for her father. Have a listen via the link below.
You can find Sarah’s album digitally through the various portals, however, I strongly encourage you to grab a copy of STAR PARADE on vinyl, or better still, head out to a Sarah Carroll show and buy a copy on CD or vinyl from her in person. All details on Sarah’s website HERE.
From Sarah, January 2018:
1. My latest album is called Star Parade. I made it at Vale Sound in Upper Moore Creek, near Tamworth, NSW, with my dear buddy Leigh Ivin, who produced, engineered and played on everything, as well as my son George Wilson, the amazing Ronny Rindo and my music sisters Jackie Marshall and Gleny Rae. We also had contributions from my husband and son Chris and Fenn Wilson, Newcastle pianist Matt Gaudry, the bard of Bourke Andrew Hull and the remaining members of the Rindo family. It took about 18 months from go-to-whoa and involved George and me travelling up [from Victoria] to Tamworth three times. The songs contain stories of adventure, family, nature, loss and memory, friendship and pain, and cars. All things I care deeply about.
2. I live in Clifton Springs, Victoria. We moved here with our little boys in 2001 from Melbourne because I wanted to live by the sea. It’s being developed and I hate that, every tree cut down makes me sad. It’s still stunningly beautiful though and full of great people with excellent minds. I have nowhere to go to create really. I have written many songs in my loungeroom at 1am after everyone else has fucked off to bed. Also on my own bed and sometimes in the car.
3. Why do I do this stuff? I have no choice in the matter. It ticks all the boxes for me; I get around, meet new people, express myself, dress up, laugh and make things. I have a tribe.
4. Currently, one favourite song is Glacier by John Grant, [from album] Pale Green Ghosts. ’This pain is a glacier moving through you/Carving out deep valleys, and creating spectacular landscapes…’
5. I’ve just finished recording an album with one of my bands, The Cartridge Family, a four-piece hillbilly harmony outfit. Our previous release was entitled (by me) Sunshine-Filled Songs Of Death And Deceit. It is the most hilarious band but also very good. We’ll launch it in March, and then I have a fabulous concept for my next solo effort. I’ve also been loving making music with my kids and watching them take off since they moved back to town recently. George’s band Tiny Giants is about to launch album no. 4 which is incredible and Fenn has his second LP in the works...the most beautiful songs. George is also putting a band together which will have Fenn on drums. Both boys can write, sing and play with a level of skill and soul which continually floors me and their dad.
6. My secret superpower is that I think I might be a pretty good teacher.
