Fic Recs: In Honor of Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day
So, chances are if you’re following me you probably know that I write fic. However, I also read a lot, definitely way more than I write. I am occasionally bad at showing my own appreciation for other writers (working on it), so in honor of this auspicious occasion, I wanted to put together this little list of some of my favs. Without further adieu:
The Making of Monsters series by @shu-of-the-wind
Starting with The Price of War, this is the series that stole my soul without warning and threw me deep into the Darecy trash can. It has basically everything you could ask for: badass women, social justice themes, amazing writing, and epic feels. Oh, and did I mention trans!Kate Bishop? Because it’s the best. Aptly tagged the Anti-Fridge AU, this AU DD rewrite is better than canon (so much better).
Between Disaster and Atrocity also by @shu-of-the-wind (are you sensing a theme? It’s not my fault--literally everything she writes is amazing and I fully support just going down her entire works list)
I may be a little biased because it was gifted to me, but helLO Devil Sai Shock (Matt/Darcy/Elektra). Vigilantes and queer ladies and poly negotiations, oh my. It’s not secret that I love Elektra, and the way shu writes her is just like...shot to the heart. Excellent solution for dealing with the frustrated “Why can’t you two just be happy” feels of vigilanteshipping (Matt/Elektra) XD
I’m going to move on because this could honestly be a list of entirely shu, but really, go show her some love, she’s incredible.
There’s No Textbook for This by Ardatli
Young Avengers as university professors, Billy/Teddy all the way with angst and feelings galore. I come back to this every few months to re-read it because it’s pretty great. (Also may or may not have somewhat inspired the law professor Darecy AU I’m working on, but that’s neither here nor there).
Teenage Wasteland by Khirsah
While we’re on the subject of Billy/Teddy and the Young Avengers...holy mother of god. I think this may have been the first Billy/Teddy fic I ever read and *ouch* straight to the feels. A bit of a rough ride emotionally, but so very worth it.
180 Days and Counting series by SaraNoH and the_wordbutler
All your Marvel favs as elementary school teachers, navigating life, love, and other pesky emotions that are really just inconvenient. Ensemble piece, but Stucky fans will enjoy. Good stuff. Good. Stuff.
Motion Practice universe by the_wordbutler
I may be a little biased because as a future lawyer, legal AUs are a Thing that I enjoy immensely, but honestly, everything in this series is fantastic. The characters are really well-developed and are written beautifully. Main ships: Clint/Coulson, Tony/Bruce, and Stucky, with an occasional side of Pepper/Natasha. I seriously cannot rec this hard enough.
All the Things I Did Not See series by Kavi Leighanna
Captain Hill FBI/BAU ‘verse? Sign me the hell up. If you like Maria, honestly just go read everything by this author. Such a good Maria, so well done (Steve’s cool too, but holy god, Maria)--makes me super jealous in the best way.
Get ready for it series by Philyra
Look, I’m going to be honest here, I know absolutely nothing about hockey. But Philyra’s MCU and OuaT hockey ‘verses legit make me want to learn. Another Maria characterization that makes me want to cry with how good it is. All the awesome ladies being awesome, and the OuaT ‘verse harder, better, faster, stronger is the same way.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t have any superhusbands recs on the list, so here are two of my all-time favs, both by scifigrl47:
The Act of Creation Will Be Your Salvation:
Botfeels. Botfeels galore. I did not realize how many emotions I could have about a small family of robots and AIs, but this fic (and the resulting series) have made me laugh and cry and generally cycle through the whole emotional spectrum. Anyone who knows me knows that Tony Stark is my favorite mess of a son and his characterization is A++++++. Just trust me--you will not regret reading this.
In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned By Nick Fury):
Look, between this series and the spinoffs in Phil Coulson’s Case Files of the Toasterverse, if you’re looking for a good time, this is the place to go. It’s silly and ridiculous fun, while still having its serious moments and great character and relationship development. Tony builds a sentient toaster...I...don’t really know what else to say.
Also worth mentioning:
Anything by sarcasticfina. Literally anything and everything. It does not matter your fandom or your ship(s), everything she writes is magic and I die.
Also, the Run ‘Verse by themonkeycabal
Are you a fan of Darcy Lewis as Tony Stark’s daughter? Well then, this is the place for you. Women being awesome, family feels, and the slowest of slow burn for the WinterShock. Darcy is the best. Bucky’s cool too, I guess. (Actually though, they’re super great and really cute).
I have a lot more recs in my bookmarks, but these are definitely at the top of my list, especially for Marvel fics.
