Question for Shraley: which of the kids took the longest to be calm after being rescued?

“Most of the children calmed down within a few days, but a few remained wary.  When Falran and Briggs pulled off their scheme to get five more children, the youngest, a three-year-old girl named Kelles, was absolutely terrified.  It took the little darling a few weeks to even go near myself, Gilrod, or Falran on her own.  With coaxing of an older Liraiphe, she would let one of us hold her, but that was rare.  Grittal did wonders on her nerves her first few weeks here, demonstrating that we were safe to be around by practically using Falran as a jungle gym.  Even now, a year later, she is wary around Gilrod, but she seems more comfortable around me and Falran.  She doesn’t seem to hate being held now, but we tend to let other Liraiphes carry her if she needs to get anywhere.”

I am actually really glad these were asked about Gilrod, because he’s gonna have some major character development pretty soon!

1: What’s Gilrod’s biggest insecurity and how would they react if someone pointed it out to them?

He’s a natural born leader and takes to being the patriarch of the family quite nicely.  He is very used to being obeyed.  Now, most are perfectly fine with obeying him.  He just has one of those personalities.  However, when someone rebels, he tends to lose his temper a bit because he feels undermined and does not appreciate it.  When it is pointed out, he gets defensive and asserts his authority to stop any accusations.

7: Does Gilrod have any irrational phobias?

No, not really.  He sometimes fears for the safety of the Liraiphe children, but I wouldn’t call that irrational.

17: Does Gilrod suffer from any mental health issues?

He’s pretty stable, actually, aside from his few and far between bouts of anger.

18: What kind of intrapersonal values does Gilrod have? (values about their self, what makes them feel like a valid person)

He puts a lot of stock in being respected and obeyed.  When someone disobeys, he feels as though his authority is being undermined.

26: What is the most intense thing Gilrod has been battling with?

Balancing discipline with mercy.  It’s either one extreme or the other with him.

30: What makes Gilrod defensive quickest?

People pointing out his temper or whenever his discipline goes a bit too far.

11: How did the Liraiphe kids react to hearing they’re adopted?

Well, they each discovered that right when Gilrod or Shraley met them in the sacrificial field.  Some reacted in overwhelming relief, others in lingering fear of the Quents, others in excitement, and even a few in horror.  After living with the Quents for a while, each child eventually accepted their new life and even started enjoying it.

Hello! I love your stories. So, the Liraphes have wings, but are the Sarbithians phyaucally different from humans at all (aside from height)?

Sarbithians basically do look exactly like humans, and their variation in skin tone and eye and hair color is just as vast.  Their biology is slightly different though.  They tend to have better eyesight than Humans, but slightly worse hearing.  They are also very sensitive to touch and generally have relatively long fingers, at least compared to Humans.

Sarbithians do have a very deadly weakness.  In their world (called the Thrae), there are four other species that appeared: Mians, Humans, Liraiphes, and Lunaia.  Of these four, Mians are the most dangerous.  Though they are only half the height of humans, if even a drop of their blood gets in a Sarbithian’s blood stream (which has a purplish-blue hue), the Sarbithian has a high likelihood of dying.  Almost as soon as contact is made, they begin to convulse and foam at the mouth.  If they survive, they often gain a disability, frequently in the form of lost eyesight.

Also, because of the tint of their blood, in certain light, their skin can look either purple or blue, but it’s usually only noticeable on the palest of Sarbithians.
