This annual gathering, which brings together inspiring women from around the globe, concluded with a memorable dinner at the legendary Sardi's. As a dedicated member of the Global Woman Club since 2018, I’ve experienced incredible networking opportunities and personal growth. However, the true highlight of my membership has been meeting extraordinary women from all over the world. This summit provided the perfect chance to reconnect with fellow members, celebrate our achievements, and end our day at a restaurant that embodies New York’s theater culture.Experiencing Broadway Theater Culture with Global Woman LeadersAs part of the summit’s festivities, I had the honor of introducing two inspiring leaders, Elisabeth Villiger Toufexis, the Global Director of Global Woman Cyprus, and Susanne Fagerstrom, the Global Director of Global Woman Stockholm, to a slice of New York’s vibrant theater culture. After an inspiring day at the summit, I couldn’t resist taking them to one of my favorite spots, Sardi’s. The storied restaurant sits in the heart of the Theater District, exuding the spirit and legacy of Broadway. Sharing this experience allowed us to savor an incredible meal and the rich cultural history that makes Sardi’s a timeless destination for theater lovers.The History and Iconic Caricatures of Sardi'sSardi's has captivated theater enthusiasts since 1921, when Vincent Sardi Sr. and his wife Eugenia founded the restaurant. Inspired by Joe Zelli’s in Paris, Sardi Sr. hired artist Alex Gard to capture the essence of theater’s brightest stars in caricature form. In exchange for one free meal a day, Gard’s caricatures have become a unique signature of Sardi’s. Today, the walls feature over 1,200 portraits of New York’s cultural icons, each a testament to the legacy of Broadway’s elite. This tradition has given Sardi’s a warm, inviting atmosphere filled with history and charisma.Celebrating Stars and Caricatures, Old and NewThe restaurant still upholds its caricature tradition, with current artist Richard Baratz adding around 20 portraits each year. Unveiled at a special champagne reception, these caricatures honor a new generation of cultural icons. Recent honorees include stars like Christian Slater, Michael Douglas, Whoopi Goldberg, Charlton Heston, Brooke Shields, Nathan Lane, and Dame Edna. Seeing these portraits on the wall felt like walking through a hall of fame dedicated to the brightest in entertainment.Sardi’s: More Than Just a RestaurantSardi’s has always been more than just a dining establishment. Actor Dennis King famously compared it to Shakespeare’s Mermaid Tavern, calling it “the greatest theatrical restaurant in the world.” According to King, it has also served as a message center, a casting venue, and even a place to seek advice. The restaurant’s significance grew in 1946 when it inspired the popular radio show Luncheon at Sardi’s, inviting listeners into the world of New York theater. The first Saturday this new year, we were treated to a delightful whirlwind trip to NYC. Reservations at Sardi's, Broadway's Avenue Q, the Rockefeller Center, 5th Avenue, the mall, and another fantastic production at a different theater, before racing for the train back to Philly. It was raining all day, which I liked, because it meant less crowds.
