i’m introducing my friend to the marauders fandom and FANFICTION IN GENERAL by having him read “that’s the art of getting by”
idk if that was too intense but he needs to know what he’s signing up for… or am i just unhinged
I'm finally reading that's the art of getting by by Sarewolf and it's so painful and sad and wonderful
I've been wanting to read Wolfstar raising Harry for so long and this is scratching the itch perfectly
that’s the art of getting by - sarewolf (@sarewolf)
In this Wolfstar-raising-Harry fic, Remus is a man on the brink of coping, unable to put the word ‘love’ into his own mouth or to accept that he is deserving of comfort and afraid of the pain that love can bring, even as he finds ways to fill his young ward’s life full of it. A toddler Harry himself is finding his way to security and trust having been rescued from both neglect and violence at the hands of the Dursleys and as readers we bear witness to the role he plays in bringing Remus a little further back from the edge. The Wolfstar featured here is not one of unstoppable burning passion, but sharp edges and unspoken words, a slow forgiveness between two individuals who are both betrayer and betrayed. You’ll also see one of the gentlest versions of Molly Weasley and her family, a truly cruel rat returning from the dead, and something that inexplicably lodged in my memory - magical cereal dragons bellowing marshmallow fire. I recommend this fic as one of the most effective at conveying Remus’ complete exhaustion in attempting to reclaim life in the face of secrecy, loss and grief, having been a weapon in a war than most were unaware of, with bright spots of hope and humour in the normality of daily life on the road to recovery.

“What do you want me to do?” Remus says, tiredly. All he wants is to curl up on his bed. Smoke a pack of cigarettes. Get drunk. He can’t stop looking at Harry.
“Remus...” Dumbledore is gentle. Remus hates when he has that tone. Hates that he knows it will hurt. “There is no one else left.”
A bitter laugh escapes him. “So you’ll curse the poor thing with a werewolf for a guardian?”
Oh, what a beautiful fic. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL FIC!! I can’t even begin to explain how incredible-
This is angsty, as you can probably imagine. It’s so so sad - devastatingly heartbreaking. But so beautiful, so lovely. And it does have a happy ending!
This is a story in which Remus - lonely and broken - raises Harry, later on together with Sirius. This is a story of loving and hating: it beautifully portraits the scars left from the first war, the betrayals and suspicion. It portraits anger and pain, but also forgiveness and happiness. It’s a f*cking masterpiece. I mean, I normally never read raising harry fics (I’m just not that fond of kids), but I loved this. Loved loved loved.
I must also mention that this is a piece of art: it’s so incredibly beautifully written - it will blow your mind. BEAUTIFUL!
Just, be prepared for sadness, ok? I cried a lot reading this fic. I cried to basically every chapter, I think (sometimes even in public… whoops). But if you think you can handle that level of sadness, then you must read this fic. If you love Remus and Sirius, you MUST read this fic, ok?
One particular quote that had me crying like mad:
“He hopes they can see Harry now. He hopes they can see that Remus did come home. Bruised and battered but carrying their child into some semblance of a life. He hopes they can see.”
