What have I been up to? Been taking a bit of a break from painting this week due to wrist pain in both hands, so while I will be doing more English Civil War soon (and some Napoleonics to follow), I spent a few nights this week building this lovely terrain from Sarissa Precision!
Unboxing: Sarissa Precision Terrain Tile System
I already have some Sarissa Precision Terrain tiles, I worked out how many extra I needed for a Barons' War 3'x4' table, turned out I needed eight more full size tiles, which was good as Sarissa produce a set with nine tiles for around £17, which is better than the large set for around £40 I thought I was going to have to buy. I ordered the tiles on a Sunday and they arrived on the Wednesday, so I was very happy with that.
It arrived well packaged, did not weight much either.
There was a flyer about dice towers, which does not really interest me as I have dice trays. There was also a sweet, and it did not contain milk (I have a milk allergy) so I quickly and greedily consumed it.
Sarissa had included a short booklet about the terrain tile system. The booklet explains how to use the tiles and decorate them with some fantastic terrain, though my terrain tiles are going to not be so grandiose.
Finally the tiles themselves. They came in shrink wrapped plastic which was fairly easy to open and my living room was filled with the aroma of laser cut MDF. I quite like the smell, not so sure my wife does though@
The tiles interlock and are a reasonable size measuring 8" (20cm) on each side. I am going to decorate them with various coloured flock and I plan to colour match them with my hills.

So I finished this earlier. It’s a Flatbed Wagon (Rolling Stock) in 28mm scale from Sarissa Precision’s Railway range.
When I first saw the range, my second thought (my immediate thought was “that’s a cool range”) was “will this work for 40k scale?”. And, after a year of just hemming and hawing on whether to buy anything, I dipped a toe in and bought one single wagon as a test piece.
Working with MDF is VERY different to working with plastic. With MDF, you absolutely have to go over the bits with a knife or file to get rid of the little bits of leftover wood that connect the parts to the whole sheet, otherwise it will fuck you up. Also, you really need to keep an eye out on pieces other wise they will break if you are not careful.
Other than that, it’s not really a bad kit to make. I kind of messed up a bit by using superglue on one part of the construction when PVA glue would have been the better option, so there’s that.
But yeah; scale-wise, they work perfectly for 40k, as you can see from the quartet of models surrounding the wagon, and I’m tempted badly to get one of the full engines and build that. But... I’d need more space for that!
