First sashiko project: mending neighbor's umbrella bag (with permission) because she was kind enough to lend it to me for a beach day! It was ripped when she received it from her sister. Idk what's up with that but y'know, that ain't my business and it gave me a project so I'm happy enough.
Lots learned. The good: could have burned the ripped nylon edges to stop further fraying before everything was basted down, but that could have ended up turning black and I like the clear look the nail polish gave. Also very happy with how well the side seam stayed together considering it's on a vertical line of stitches. Happy with how much of the pencil markings I could get out and how well the basting stitches came out. The stitch pattern works really well with the stripes and I'm glad I could save and realign as much of the ripped portion of the fabric as possible. And my neighbor is happy!
The bad: should have used a plain color patch if the main fabric was striped, but w/e. My stitch evenness isn't great but it's okay for such small lines; I don't think this pattern is meant for half-inch steps and it's very difficult to do this in a thin tube. The thread color makes it difficult to see the pattern; this could be a good or bad thing depending on intent, but I'd wanted this one to be more visible so should have chosen a different color. Wish I'd have taken care of the fabric anti-fraying before the project, but ah well. Learned I need better marking tools; I started with an air/water soluble pen but it solubed too fast. I need something I can choose when to put on and take off. A longer needle and sashiko thimble will be needed but weren't for this project, but good to get them before I need them.
