Chapter 2
When the moon realizes the suns been shining on them all along
Sasuke went out to bars most nights drinking his feelings. He thought to himself since it’s been over a month, maybe he finally needed to get the post breakup rebound sex out of the way but every time he tried to pursue someone, Naruto corrupted his mind. How could he find someone so loving and gentle again. He sat at the bar with his 5th beer when an older gentleman, nicely dressed with grey hair approached him.
“Hey what’s with the mask?” Sasuke asked
“I just don’t care to show my face.” He said slightly smirking. You only knew he was smiling because his expressions were clearly written in his eyes.
“Too handsome?!” Sasuke smirked.
“I’d be happy to show you, but then I might have to kill you.” He said, eyebrows raised.
“Oh one of those types? Huh?” There was something about this guy that had Sasuke intrigued. The way he spoke and the way he looked at him.
“Names Kakashi, yours?”
“Oh uh, Sasuke.”
“So Sasuke, what’s a handsome young guy doing out here on Wednesday night?” He questioned. He didn’t know how to answer that. He’s been coming to this bar almost every night since Naruto left and tonight was no different.
“Oh, ya know, just looking for a good time.”
“Uh huh, so, then why don’t we get out of here and then you can see what’s under this mask?” Sasuke thought to himself for a moment before downing the rest of his beer. That was weirdly fast but might as well get this over with… Sasuke followed Kakashi out of the bar where he guided him to his car. Kakashi took off his mask and Sasuke thought to himself that he was indeed very handsome, he was somewhat older than him but didn’t really look like it. He had light wrinkles around his eyes when he smiled. Hair dyed purely grey but more of a fashion statement than older men’s hair. While Sasuke scanned his face he realized the scar that was across one of Kakashis eyes. In his slightly dazed mind he reached up to softly touch the scar. “How did you get this?” Kakashi looked over at Sasuke.
“It was a fight, one where I lost my best friend.” Sasuke saw the sadness in his eyes, knowing he didn’t mean a fight between friends but one where his friend died. “Oh, I’m sorry I asked.” Sasuke was too familiar with that look of grief when someone mentions a loved one that’s been lost.
“It’s okay, most people are curious but that’s when my mask comes in.”
“How long ago did it happen?” Sasuke asked curiously.
“Oh when I was a kid, so several years ago, I actually visit his grave often, bringing flowers and things I think he would enjoy if he was still here.”
Sasuke stared at him while he spoke of his deceased best friend and didn’t quite understand how he could speak about him. He was able to smile and laugh at his own memories of them together. Sasuke could barely gather the courage to talk about Itachi and that’s his own blood. This stranger was obviously sad about what happened but could speak about his friend’s death without hesitation.
“Can I ask you something?” Sasuke said shyly. Trying to muster up the courage. They were at a red stoplight and Kakashi looked at him curiously. “Sure?”
“Do you think it’s harder losing a parent if you grew up with them, versus them passing when you were a baby?” He asked in a low voice. “Honestly I’m not sure, I think both are equally shitty, for me I lost my dad at a young age, never really knew my mom so I guess I experienced both losses differently. It was harder moving on from my dad because we would go fishing together, cook, and have movie nights. On the other hand when I had my first boyfriend I yearned for my mother’s love and advice. I thought a mom would be more understanding of these weird confusing feelings of being into guys. Does that help?”
Sasuke stared out the window thinking how could he be so blind to Naruto’s feelings. He was hurting too and he blew it off when he should have been there and heard him out. He could feel his face heating up from more than the alcohol as a tear tried to escape his eyes. “Yeah, thanks for that…”
“I know I asked you back to my place but if you want to just go to a diner, sober up some, and talk, we can do that instead?” Kakashi could tell this guy was hurting and would never take advantage.
“Actually can you drop me off at this address.”
“Sure thing.” The rest of the ride was silent. Sasuke tried to think of the words he wanted Naruto to hear, hoping he wouldn’t dismiss his apology. When they arrived, Sasuke saw him, that beautiful blonde hair shining in the moonlight, eyes glistening bright blue, and a smile so contagious, Sasuke couldn’t help but grin with him, until he saw her. Naruto always claimed she was just a friend, his heart slowly broke as he saw them intertwined in a kiss. Shock was written on his face and before Kakashi could say anything, Sasuke was begging for him to drive off. How could he have moved on so quickly? I never thought he would go for her. He said she was just a work friend. Quiet sobs filled the car. Sasuke desperately trying to quiet himself. This is so fucking embarrassing, get it together dude! The more he tried to convince himself to stop crying, the more it flowed out of him. Kakashi didn’t know how to react so he just grabbed Sasukes hand to show comfort. Upon Kakashis touch, Sasuke got louder in his cries, he could feel the pressure of his chest finally release.
“I’m so sorry, I can’t fucking stop.” He said frustrated.
“It’s all good, I take it, that was an ex?”
Sasuke could only nod his head yes. He held on tighter to Kakashis hand, hoping it would distract him enough to gather himself back up, and not look like a total mess in front of this guy he just met.
They arrived at a house that he assumed belonged to Kakashi.
“Hey how about we go in, grab some coffee and you can crash here for the night?” His tone was soft and kind. It was weird how some stranger could show how he cared when he originally just wanted a fuck. Sasuke slowly got out of the car and followed the older gentleman into the house. When he walked in, he never expected this guy to have such a comforting home. Plants were found around almost every corner, he had a library in his living room. Rows and rows of books. His walls told a story, multiple photographs of his travels, friends, and one in particular that had to be his dad. He’s never been in a home that felt so warm and inviting. He thought maybe his childhood home felt this way, but he could hardly remember.
“Make yourself comfortable” he heard from the kitchen, where Kakashi was preparing their coffees. Sasuke walked into the living room and sat on the couch staring at the piano that was in the corner of the room. He wondered if he still knew how to play, if it would come back to him, like riding a bicycle. He used to practice everyday when he was younger. Having mini concerts for his family every Sunday. He hadn’t played since they died. Kakashi walked back in with two mugs, seeing Sasuke hover his hands above the piano.
“You play?” He asked curiously.
“Yeah I used to, but I don’t know if I even remember the basics for Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”
“How about you try?”
Sasuke sat down in the piano chair opening the fallboard. He lingered over the keys for a moment as if he was scared to play. He then felt a presence behind him. Kakashi stood over him with his hands slightly hovering over Sasukes, encouraging his fingers to hit the keys. Sasukes nervousness grew. He’s so gentle… He started to play with the help of Kakashi guiding his hands. A shy smile appeared on his face as memories of his family flashed in his head. Kakashi slowly pulled away as he saw Sasuke was able to remember and play by himself. He fell into the music remembering old tunes he thought were long forgotten. Kakashi sat on the couch watching in awe as the guy in front of him played so passionately. Sasuke sat there, eyes closed letting the music come back to him, his fingers moved so gracefully but in an aggressive manner, like he was releasing the pain he’s felt since his family had gone. Kakashi sat there sipping his coffee with the cheesiest of grins on his face watching this strange guy come back to life. He felt honored to be witness to whatever was unfolding right in front of him. Sasuke played for hours not realizing at some point Kakashi had fallen asleep. He stood up and closed the fallboard. I’ve missed this… For the first time in quite a while, he felt happy to have found his passion again. Before grabbing the mugs, he took one of the blankets hanging on the back of the couch and placed it over Kakashi. It reminded him of when him and Naruto were in college and he’d had fallen asleep on his books while studying. Drool leaking from his mouth. He chuckled at the memory. As much as he would love to move on from Naruto, he’s not ready to give up just yet, they have too much history. Even if Naruto has moved on, he can’t.
He walked into the kitchen, mugs in hand, making sure to clean them before heading back to the couch. On his way back to the living room he came across a picture of two young boys. One looked annoyed and the other had goggles on his head, showing off his bright teeth, wearing a smile that looked quite familiar. Naruto. He knew this was the best friend Kakashi was talking about. Him and Naruto were close friends like this before they started dating. He couldn’t imagine losing a friend that young. Honestly he never gave Naruto enough credit, he’s always been there for him. He really did try to stay with Sasuke, he loved him, but Sasuke couldn’t find a way to get through his own heartache and loss that he didn’t notice it was bringing Naruto down with him. Sasuke was starting to understand he fucked up, but maybe he can learn to heal and finally move on from all the pain that drove Naruto away. He wanted him back and he knew the only way to do that, was to finally choose to move on from his own pain and suffering.

Chapter 1
What Happens When the Moon is too Dark, that Not Even the Sun can Shine Through to Bring in the Light?
“You will never understand the things I went through Naruto! I’m sorry I can’t always show how I care, it’s hard for me when I have lost everything and the thought of losing you too would be unbearable. I can’t breathe at the thought of you not being in my life but you have to be patient with me. I’m trying to love myself again and trying to learn how to be loved by you!” Sasuke was pleading for Naruto to stay, to not give up on him. Naruto sat there with tears in his eyes holding Sasukes hand. Silence engulfed the room. Naruto had nothing left to say, this was the hardest choice he had to make but he needed someone present in loving him, someone who wouldn’t blow him off or be disrespectful because they had a hard day. We all have hard times, it was the constant pity me party. Naruto’s parents were dead too, he was brutally bullied, and was beaten by his guardians throughout foster care and he never let it take over his life and choices, he tried his hardest to move on from it all, but Sasuke had a habit of throwing it in Narutos face that his parents deaths were harder on him. Naruto never knew his, they passed when he was a baby and Sasuke reminded him of that. Naruto was hurting too but Sasukes pain was more than his. Naruto was tired of it and tired of Sasuke breaking his heart.
Naruto stood up and Sasuke followed his move. He stared at Sasuke grabbing his chin to pull his face up for one last kiss. Eyes full of tears, words never leaving his lips. Sasuke grabbed his hand. “Please don’t do this.” He cried out. Naruto stared at him as if he was memorizing every inch of Sasuke. He pulled away as the tips of their hands lingered just a little longer, before Naruto grabbed his things and walked out the door. Tears flowed out of Sasuke as he clenched his chest. He’s not actually gone, he can’t be, he loves me. He’s coming back… in 3… 2… 1… he’s got to come back. I love him. Several minutes passed by, Sasuke waited for the door to open, his cries echoing throughout the house. He was still clenching his chest, begging himself to breathe. As he tried to calm down, he lied on the couch. Hoping Naruto would walk back through that door. Sasuke waited the next coming days but he never did.
