I AM SO! HAPPY FOR THEM!!
2/21 Grave of the Fireflies
This film was WAY darker than anything you normally see from Ghibli but after hearing the warning about this week's content being emotionally challenging, the whimsy I normally associate with Ghibli faded about 30 seconds in. The movie LITERALLY opens on the death of the main character.
In comparison to Barefoot Gen, this movie was definitely less graphic. There are still bombings and violence and wounded people but it's honestly very minimal in comparison. For Monday's post I addressed that one of the reasons these films are so emotionally evocative is because they're NOT fiction. These were real historical events and that *exact* story may not have happened but that EXPERIENCE did. According to google 先生, this film is actually based off a semi autobiographical short story by the same name written by Akiyuki Nosaka in tribute to his younger sister (aged 1 year 4 months) who died during the war from malnourishment. He (rightfully so) felt a lot of survivors guilt for not being able to save her. Just like Gen, we once again see an older sibling forced into a parental role in an instant and similarly this younger sibling is the driving force behind the male lead. Unfortunately this time there are no happy endings.
The big echoing message in both of these films is quite simply that innocence isn't enough to spare someone, especially children during wartimes. In this story Setsuko meets essentially the same fate as Tomoko despite Seita's best efforts. I thought it was especially impactful for the narrative to be inverted and work its way backwards. There's no questioning of whether there will be a happy ending, the cold truth is presented up front. Having Seita take his last breaths while janitors clean up for Americans who will soon come was a painfully powerful showcasing of the state of Japan after it's defeat, hanging on by merely a thread. It was also very stylistically interesting to keep Setsuko's personal moments secret until after her death. Naturally because the narrative is told through Seita, we know very little about Setsuko other than that she remains in their makeshift shelter while Seita is away. The montage of her chasing fireflies and playing rock paper scissors with her reflection in the water really showcases how truly innocent she was.

Yellow: 7 facts about my childhood
1. It sucked xD2. Nah like until 2nd grade or so it was actually okay3. In kindergarten, in summer, my dad would pick me up on his scooter, and I thought it was hella embarrassing4. I developed boobs a lot earlier than other girls so one day I got laughed laughed at by the boys in the dressing room we share for P.E.5. I used to have bangs my mom would cut. Jesus. Looking at pictures from that time just makes me want to cry..6. I actually used to go out lots because all my friends lived super close to me, and I’d mostly hang out with the boys lmao. I actually got mistaken for a boy a lot until I was like ~7 or so? Because I always had short hair : D7. Spent a lot of time in Italy in my school holidays, and actually had friends that would meet yearly or so. Sometimes I kinda miss that time, but ah well.
