A Moment of Rest

A little something for @bornoffireandwisdom and their Saudade AU for batim, which inspired the scene in my own AU regarding Norman. Thank you for inspiring me <3

She looked down at her stained hands and couldn’t believe what she saw. Fingers intertwined with hers once more, but they weren’t the ones she had hoped to find. Indeed, the clasp of the projectionist was very different from that of her brother, Norman Polk.

And yet they were one in the same.

Wendy stopped herself from squeezing any harder than she was just in time to prevent his noticing. The projectorhead’s light was shut off; she hoped that meant he was sleeping; she hoped that the monster was able to rest at all.

She shuddered, horrified at how easily “monster” had come to mind.

And then on queue, his light fluttered just for a second. Wrapped in her own thoughts, she once more had unconsciously gripped him just a bit too tight. “Please…please just go back to sleep…” she silently begged.

She hated to admit it, but it hurt her so much to see him, let alone see him awake.

He walked with a lurch- almost a hop. Machinery was stabbed into and stuck in his torso. She could hear the gears whirl quietly if she allowed herself to get close.

To be close was so, so terrible.

When his light shined at her, it was so hard to look at him. The ray burned her eyes and what she could end up seeing made her so, so sad. Two reasons to make her eyes water, two reasons to not want to look at him at all.

What was surely the worst, however, was that when she DID stare into the box of the projector emanating radiance…she could see a line. A silhouette of the top of one’s head trapped inside.

What a terrible existence. Even as she had only begun to know the truth so, so briefly, her years of ignorance about Norman’s fate was washed away until all that was left was regret. Why hadn’t she come sooner? Why hadn’t she come s-

Wendy couldn’t see anything for a split second, nothing but a pale yellow filling her sight. And as he lifted his “head” and stared at the distraught woman, she began to cry. What a strange thing for Norman to wake up to. His light flickered, almost like a confused blink. She was sad. Please, don’t be sad. Please, don’t be sad…

A weight fell upon her shoulders, and she gasped. The deaf projectionist maybe couldn’t hear her sobs, but he could feel them. And so with every breath, he held her tighter and tighter. It was the only way to communicate that whatever could be bothering her, she wasn’t alone. Norman would be there to help, no matter how scary it was.

And somehow indeed, this helped the woman realize just that. Through the inky, cold shell of his flesh, a warmth burrowed between them. It gave her the strength to close her eyes and wrap her arms back around him; it gave her the bravery to find peace.

And so brother and sister long lost embraced, even as Bendy lurked the halls, even as ink swam under their knees. It was the only thing they could do for each other, the only way they could begin to apologize.

hiya!! And it’s going pretty swell- I know I don’t post much about it, but trust me behind the scenes stuff is being done!

won’t say to much because I don’t want to promise anything and then not do it in the end, but I do have an animatic idea for the au so. We’ll see! also- me and my friends decided to name the au the Saudade au!
