On the implications of the cancellation of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TOTTMNT), the difficulties in reviving Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (ROTTMNT), and the uncertain future of the franchise.
TMNT is a franchise that burst onto the market without asking for permission: a self-published comic blending absurd and outrageous ideas, many of which were trendy at the time. No one expected it to become a cultural phenomenon.
Those familiar with the history of the Ninja Turtles know that, despite its undeniable successes, the franchise has also faced moments of uncertainty, when its survival was in doubt. And yet, it has endured. It has given us distinct and interesting versions, each contributing something unique to the turtles’ universe.
When Nickelodeon took the reins, there were doubts, but they managed to create TMNT 2012, a series that, while not perfect, received highly positive reviews. Four seasons concluded the main storyline coherently, accompanied by a fifth with complementary stories. Overall, its ending was satisfying and harmonious.
Then came Rise of the TMNT in 2018. This version broke conventions and, at first, many fans rejected it. Today, it seems evident that it was ahead of its time. However, its visibility and success were limited, partly due to insufficient promotion and unfavorable airing schedules. Some point to low toy sales as the main reason for its cancellation, which came in the second season and was cut short compared to the original plan. A movie, thanks to Netflix in 2022, attempted to give the story closure, but it only made clear that there was still much left to explore. The ROTTMMT fandom remains active, calling for a third season; officially, the series is “on pause,” not canceled, and hope remains alive.
In 2023, Mutant Mayhem arrived, a new cinematic version considered a success. Its sequel, originally scheduled for 2026, was postponed to 2027. To maintain interest, TOTTMNT was launched, a series that, because it depends on the movie, is difficult to compare with others and can be seen as a supplement. Three or four seasons were planned, but it was recently confirmed that the second, set to premiere at the end of 2025, will be the last, leaving a gap until 2027.
Why was TOTTMNT canceled? Basically, for profitability: only the most lucrative series are prioritized. That TOTTMNT ended in its second season, as ROTTMMT did, reveals a troubling pattern: the franchise is treated as just another product, without long-term vision or consistent support. This reflects TMNT’s instability and puts its future at risk, despite the active fandom and committed creators.
Other projects, such as the adult-oriented movie based on The Last Ronin comic, are also uncertain. What will happen after the release of Mutant Mayhem 2? Meanwhile, the ROTTMMT fandom continues demanding a third season, though it seems unlikely that the executives will listen.
Today, we live in a system where artistic value is almost exclusively measured in money and popularity. Original stories are lost if they are not profitable enough. And this happens with all art. The sad part is that TMNT has proven that it works… yet apparently, not enough for Nickelodeon and Paramount.
TMNT has identity, strength, and potential to stand on its own. It may sound idealistic, but the franchise deserves to become independent and have its own studio, even if smaller.
In short: it is no longer just about saving a single series. It is about saving TMNT as a whole. And while it hurts to see how it has been handled the last years, it is also fascinating to imagine everything it could become if given the chance it truly deserves.
This is a short essay I wrote quickly because I needed it, so it may contain some inaccuracies or missing information.
The way TMNT is turning out is giving me PTSD from Star Wars. You have a wonderful franchise that isn’t entirely perfect but still good that fans enjoy it no matter which iteration/trilogy they favor. Then what happens? Some big company comes and absolutely dismantles the crap out of the original material and strips it of what made the franchise original and amazing. Your characters are not the same. The world building isn’t the same. It’s just… not the same. There’s nothing wrong with change, or building on new ideas. But lately, Nickelodeon has been dangling these big projects everyone wants and snatching them away just so they can appeal to their agenda of “kid friendly content.” There’s nothing INHERENTLY wrong with that. TMNT has always been for kids and such. But why are they scared to give us an adaptation of The Last Ronin which is pretty dark, but still hung on to the TMNT we know and love? TMNT has been around long enough to have fully grown fans who still want fresh content.
Anyways this has been a messy rant. I could go on and on about both Star Wars and TMNT but the bottom line is: Nickelodeon, Disney, whatever major company that is doing this, is destroying franchise after franchise and I’m sick of it.
Raph is always depicted as the loving and understanding big brother, I on the other hand, think Raph would be like does overprotective old grandmothers that cannot stand their children have someone special and they enter in Karen mode.
Also this are the designs for the Beat Rush Au I have in mind. ٩( ᐛ )و

me when paramount/nickelodeon cancelled Tales of TMNT:
Context:
Paramount/Nickelodeon canceled the Tales of TMNT series so they can produce more content for the incredibly boring and overexploited SpongeBob SquarePants series, along with other equally boring shows and Paw Patrol and South Park.
I mean, I can understand South Park and Paw Patrol, but SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS??? The show is awful, and they've overexploited it so much that I can't even explain it; even the characters are begging to be freed. And this is the 4TH TIME THEY'VE CANCELED A TMNT PROJECT (the other 3 sequels to TMNT 2007, the 3rd installment of TMNT Bayverse, the cancellation of ROTTMNT, and now this one); like, you already canceled the Transformers ONE sequel, don't take away something else that makes me happy. ( ≧Д≦)
Maybe we couldn't save ROTTMNT, but we can try now to save Tales of TMNT because if things continue like this and they keep canceling TMNT series, it's very likely they won't produce any more series or films in this franchise, and many won't be able to fully explore all the themes they're meant to cover. It already happened with ROTTMNT and now with Tales of TMNT, and if this continues, there won't be any more TMNT content soon because people won't be interested.
I feel like they're not interested enough in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to make more seasons... and that they'll soon forget about them and abandon them. Let's keep in mind what you said about the length of the seasons for each version of the turtles; literally, each version started having fewer seasons. Rise had two seasons and ended on hiatus, now Tales was canceled and didn't last long. Do you have any theories about that?
I don't mean to sound cruel, I just have suspicions that this could happen. If I'm wrong, please let me know.
I don't think that TMNT will be abandoned, purely because of the fact that it has a strong fan base dating back over 40 years now, however I do feel as if it may become neglected. Like we might get some content here or there but nothing major, no long term projects because it simply feels like Nickelodeon doesn't have the patience to give these projects a chance to leave their mark.
