WE’RE NOT DOOMED: Wed April 8, 2026

Yesterday sucked. It was easy to feel like there was no light at the end of the the tunnel, and, frankly, I didn’t think reminding you otherwise was gonna be productive, unfortunately.

But it’s a new day and I’m ready not to feel Doomed, what about you?

Let’s start with an international story!

International

Mon, March 9 - The US attempted to stop the UN’s 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women from recognizing trans women. I say attempted, because they failed.

This year, the theme was “Ensuring and Strengthening Access to Justice for All Women and Girls” and, for the first time in history, Agreed Conclusion was not passed unanimously.

The Agreed Conclusion is basically a mission statement based on what took place at the CSW.

But the US tried to change the Agreed Conclusion to exclude trans women from the goals of “strengthening access to justice for all women and girls and advancing gender equality worldwide.”

They introduced eight amendments that would clarify gender as “only to men and women on the basis of biological sex.”

It didn’t go well for them.

Of all the member nations present, the only one who voted in favor of their amendments were….themselves.

And the original Agreed Conclusion passed with all member nations except the US.

This government can try to destroy the world as much as they’d like, but the world isn’t listening. And, that makes me feel less Doomed.

New Jersey

Mon, March 23 - The New Jersey Assembly passed the “John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act.” Next stop is the state Senate.

The act would enshrine the right to vote, for all citizens, into law and improve accessibility of the state election public data, which is very important to me, personally, as finding info for my election guides is so much harder than you think.

Now, the bill has been introduced in the Assembly since 2022, and the State Senate has never taken it up, but hopefully this time, it’s different.

As sponsor Rep Verlina Reynolds-Jackson said:

Throughout the last few elections, we have experienced a concerning rise in the threat to American democracy, as voting rights face a level of scrutiny not seen since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. When those in power feel their position is threatened, their actions can become increasingly unpredictable, a dynamic we are seeing play out with the Trump administration. This makes the advancement of the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act more critical than ever.

And if it does pass the Senate, I’m sure Governor Mikie Sherrill will sign it into law.

If you live in New Jersey, please contact your state Senator and demand that they bring this bill up for a vote! With the threat of the SAVE Act this hopefully won’t be tabled.

It makes me feel less Doomed to see something like this pass the Assembly so overwhelmingly, hopefully we’ll have the same win when it comes to the Senate!

Rutherford County, Tennessee

Mon, March 30 - Luanne James was a librarian and director of the county’s local system. She was fired at a library board meeting, in a vote of 8-3, for refusing to remove 132 books containing LGBTQ+ themes from the children’s section.

More than 240 people attended the board meeting, almost all of them there to support James. The director of PEN America’s Freedom to Read program, Kasey Meehan, was even there.

She said:

With a firm: ‘I will not comply,’ Luanne demonstrated her deep commitment to the freedom to read and the principles of librarianship, at a steep cost. Her story will echo from the Courthouse in Murfreesboro, TN, across the county, as emblematic of the fight against censorship and suppression.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. We only lose when we stop fighting back. This story is not over, and hopefully seeing someone like James fight back and say no will convince other librarians to do the same.

And, if the library board is an elected position in your local election, now you know why it’s so important to vote in it.

Anytime I see people fighting back, I feel less Doomed, and I hope you do too!

U.S. Is Added to Human Rights Watchlist

The United States was added Sunday to the CIVICUS Monitor Watchlist, due to declining civil liberties.

Unsurprising, to be honest. It's disappointing, as always, but still unsurprising.

This article has a quote written by Deputy Press Secretary Anne Kelly: “This is nonsense: President Trump is leading the most transparent administration in history,”

I would like to clarify to Miss Anne Kelly that we are aware he is being transparent. No one is claiming he is hiding his actions. He broadcasts it to the world. We are aware of what is happening because he is boasting about it.

Donald Trump is not secretive about narrowing our rights as free people. He embraces the applause of his yes-men while he does it.

Trans people are not a new thing they just started feeling safer to tell people and finally found a word. We just want to live authentically as ourselves. It's not a choice because who would want to be discriminated against?

We choose to live like who we are inside. Honestly though, it's none of your business. Don't tell people being trans is a sin, even if it is (it's not) because it's not your life! As my favourite trans song: The Village -Wrabel, says, "One page of the bible isn't worth a life."

Why would you want to make people want to commit suicide for being themselves? It makes you a bad person. I already fight a battle in my head everyday, then get told that my feelings aren't valid. It's sickening to think people get abused, raped and disowned for being transgender. It's a serious issue that we need to work on! I'M NOT KIDDING! I feel unsafe going out, or just being in my school! I feel scared when I hear someone say bad things about trans people. I feel uncomfortable being around my extended family! PEOPLE HAVE IT WORSE THAN ME AND IT'S HORRIBLE!! JUSTICE FOR TRANS PEOPLE!!!!!!!

Sitting and thinking about how we have absolutely no idea of what is to come.

This could be a stressful four years of financial difficulties. They could literally take away our human rights. Or both.

People are either in the streets celebrating or crying in their beds. There are people playing optimist saying it couldn't possibly be that bad. There are people saying it's WWIII coming.

I don't know what to expect. I want to be realistic. I don't care about cutting corners and sparing feelings. I want everyone to be prepared. I just... I don't know what to prepare for except for the worst. It's so much better to be prepared for doom and meet nothing than it is to realize too little too late that doom has come to your door.

I have witnessed how quickly things can change when they want to. Florida was once a very queer friendly state. At least in major areas. I used to pride myself in Ybor's strong drag history. Our large pride parades and our ample youth support. There were bad patches, of course, it's always going to be rough outside of the cities... and lets be honest, safe for queer people didn't mean the same thing fifteen years ago that it does now. Safe for queer people fifteen years ago was facing less harassment and leading somewhat normal lives.

When I was in high school, gay marriage was legalized across the country. Most states, including Florida, had discrimination protection. Things were getting better.

It took only a year for things to hit the fan. So quickly, Desantis was able to rip my safety away. It took no effort. None. People STILL struggle to get gender affirming care. They tried to ban it even for COUNSELLING.

I wasn't yet on HRT when that happened. It was one of my big motivations to start. I had the privilege and luck to start HRT because I am on my parent's health insurance plan. Plus, I was able to pay out of pocket for the prescription so that if something like this happened I wouldn't get dinged.

Even with my privileged access to insurance and ability to drive a long distance, it took me a long time to start. I wanted to start months before I was able to.

They then tried to criminalize trans people with updated gender markers. They attempted to target trans people by enforcing all Florida IDs to have their AGAB gender marker. Those with updated licences could face a fine or even jail time.

That was VOTED IN. THEY VOTED IT IN.

The only reason it did not fly was because a (very merciful and kind) judge shot the fucking bird as it flew. Stating it was CLEARLY targetting and therefore against the state constitution.

Did you know I didn't even know about it until it was voted in? They snuck it in. They could do it because they wanted to.

When we entered 2024, one of the first deaths of a transgender person was in Florida.

It took only a year for Florida to go from a safer state for queer people to being marked UNSAFE for queer travel.

It took only one year.

I don't trust the "it won't happen" anymore. I was told that so many times, and then it DID. It DID happen.

I don't know what to expect from this. Like I said, I want to be realistic. I just don't know where to look for direction anymore.
