By spreading seeds and supporting rainforest growth, they play a powerful role in their ecosystem. Sadly, orangutans are critically endangered due to deforestation, palm oil expansion, habitat loss, and the illegal pet trade.

CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES. According to World Wildlife Fund, 45,000 to 69,000 Bornean orangutans remain in the wild. That number might seem like a lot, but consider that in 2010 only 59.6 percent of Borneo’s forests were suitable for orangutans.
