Although the wound has healed substantially, it appears that the Oxpecker birds are keeping the wound open and preventing it from healing fully. It was therefore decided to treat the wound with medical grade honey and cover it with leather, using strong suture material in the skin and one orthopaedic screw into a piece of remaining horn. This will hopefully keep the Oxpeckers at bay for a while. Oxpecker birds are usually welcomed by large mammals, they have a truly symbiotic relationship. The Oxpeckers get to feast on the many bugs and insects that live on and around the large beast, and in return the host has it’s own personal grooming attendant to remove ticks, lice and anything else that would usually infest it’s hide or fur. Sadly in this instance, the birds have hindered the healing process, but by covering the wound inflicted by the poachers, Dr. Johan has hopefully given the Rhino the protection it needs to repair. Always special seeing a Rhino Calf with its mother. Within the first few hours of its life, it will begin to suckle milk from its mother, which it will continue to do until about 18 months of age. The mother will allow her calf to drink milk exclusive for the first week or two. Fun fact The word "rhinoceros" comes from the Greek "rhino" (nose) and "ceros" (horn). Did you know? Rhino horns are used in folk medicine for their supposed healing properties, rhinos have been hunted nearly to extinction. Their horns are sometimes sold as trophies or decorations, but more often they are ground up and used in traditional Chinese medicine. The powder is often added to food or brewed in a tea in the miss belief that the horns are a powerful aphrodisiac, a hangover cure and treatment for fever, rheumatism, gout and other disorders. All of which are myths. Rhino horns are however made of keratin, which is also the key component of hair and fingernails, but the horns are not just dense clumps of hair.According to scientists at Ohio University, CT scans have shown dense mineral deposits of calcium and melanin in the core of the horn. I know the strength of bonds that can form between these animals, I’ve seen the excitement when separated individuals reunite, the gentle grunts made as they approach each other and rub faces. On many occasions I’ve seen these glorious animals rush to get back to back to protect each other if something startles them.
