Not-So-Fun Fact: Bananas are actually facing a pandemic. Panama disease TR4 affects the Cavendish banana species, which accounts for 47% of bananas grown worldwide and 99% of all bananas sold commercially for export to developed countries.
There currently isn’t a cure for Panama disease, and if left unchecked, the Cavendish banana could go extinct. Interestingly enough, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been working with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to “contain the disease through surveillance, early detection, genetic resistance and integrated management.” (source)
