Stefan appreciation week day 8: Free for all. 

Carol’s death is too heavy a weight for her and Tyler’s relationship but it’s not until the fourth time she chooses Stefan over him that she realises it. She kept insisting they would get through this, kept saying she was here for Tyler now, kept telling herself she had only taken Stefan’s side because she had to. Except she’s sitting at the end of a road, turn right for the Lockwood estate and turn left for the Salvatore boarding house and she’s not sure which way to go; there’s the way she should go and the way she wants to go and she’s telling herself it’s just an understandable rough patch but knows it’s not. In the end Tyler makes it easy for her and breaks things off.

She keeps going to Stefan’s place and he keeps coming to hers, it reminds her of that long ago summer with Tyler when nothing actually happened.

“Let’s go on a date,” Stefan says.

“Really, us? Okay,” Caroline replies.

She sleeps with him on the first date because she wants to.

But Stefan’s never been quite the same since that same said summer with Klaus.

“It’s not enough,” Stefan says one day, the words falling like a confession and an apology.

“I won’t let you kill,” Caroline replies.

It’s not enough.

He goes days, sometimes weeks, without killing, she can only ever stop him for a little while; doesn’t know what to do short of tying him down and starving him. Stefan trusts her to look after him and Caroline trusts him to look after her. She was his safety net and she allowed him to fall; this is what she realises on reflection.

“I love you,” Stefan says.

“Then don’t leave me,” Caroline replies.

“Come with me,” Stefan says.

“I can’t,” Caroline replies.

She never understood those girls who change for their man but in the end it makes sense; she’s changing for herself really, she’s not willing to give him up. Besides, she enjoys the kill, revels in it, and feels worse than terrible afterwards but that’s okay; so does he.
