Sawyers head theory that JoyBoy’s message Roger read basically told him he was too early to get the treasure blew my mind. It makes sense. It makes scary sense.

Roger sailed the voyage twice which meant double the effort double the time. When he did reach the final island his illness had already eaten away at so much of his body, a third attempt would be impossible.

The part that hits me is the message probably had specific instructions. Such rigid requirements Roger knew he could sail the path fifty times and he’d end up in the exact spot he was in. That’s why he laughed so hard. He saw the irony of his journey and in life.

Oda always portrays him as a prankster. A man who can take a joke bellowing out laughs as long as his crew isn’t harmed. That’s gotta be another reason he laughed. Despite all his efforts,successes, lows and long battles life still threw one last joke his way. The panel haunts me for good and bad reasons but at least it makes sense now.
