Sazae-oni

In today's edition, the original story of the sazae-oni. I wasn't able to find a source for the mermaid story (a later embellishment?) but even if I did I wouldn't have changed the original design. It is adorbs.

I do not know Japanese so I cannot comment meaningfully on the variations of this creature, sorry.

Sazae-oni are shape-changing yōkai from Japanese folklore. Resembling large molluscs, they are said to come into being when a turban snail reaches thirty years of age.

A famous legend tells of a crew of pirates who rescued a drowning woman. She seduced and slept with every man on the ship, but cut off their testicles when she was done. She was thrown overboard, where she revealed herself to be a disguised Sazae-oni. She bartered with the captain, and returned the crew's testicles in exchange for a large amount of gold.

Day 26: Shellmon!

A lot of people like to make comparisons between Pokemon and Digimon, despite the only real similarities being “collectable monsters”, and Shellmon is one brought up with Slowbro, however, this is just because both are based on the “Sazae-oni” from Japanese mythology!
