Open Mic : Kaede-chan, that’s your favorite song!

Kaede was out again with a bunch of friends, heading to the AKB48 Cafe.  They didn’t need to convince her to go, she was always eager to have seat over there, get one of those delicious omurice and enjoy the ambiance over there.  Moreover  she just liked going out with her friends.  And it happened she had some maths homework to do and later was always better than sooner.  She joyfully ordered her omurice, even though for a tiny second, she thought she might want some shortcake instead, but she didn’t feel for sweets, she felt for something salty.  With a nice ketchup drawing.  The ketchup was what she liked most.  She would always ask for something cute.  That she let her friend Okawa-san decide for her which word the waitress would write for her.

She was laughing and talking loudly, quite cheerful.  Some people were going up there to sing some AKB48 songs.  “Hayashi-chan!  Why don’t you go too!  You sing quite well!” said Yamamoto, a classmate.  She blushed et shook her head.  “ No way!  I’m not that good and I think I’ve got a little cold and my voice is a little harsh right now.”  She coughed a little, just to pretend she felt uncomfortable around throat.  He didn’t push any longer for her to sing, but he exchanged a quick look with Okawa and she knew exactly what he meant : as they were best friends, they wouldn’t need to say anything to understand each other and have their way.  She stood up, saying she would come back soon, she needed to go to the restrooms.

Kaede was left alone with him.  She looked at him with a smile that meant she was ready to tease.  “Sooooo.... Yamamoto-kun, have you finally confessed to her?  You like Okawa-chan, right!” She lifted an eyebrow and he looked down.  “Stop saying nonsense Hayashi-chan... there’s nothing like that between me and Mariya-chan.  We are childhood friends, nothing more.”  She didn’t believe him.  It couldn’t be anything else and she knew her friend also had feelings for him.  Well, they were still young, maybe she would finally dare to give him some chocolate on Valentines’ day.

She tilted when she heard her favorite song start up.  She lifted her eyes to the small stage to see that Mariya was waving at her and handing the microphone to her.  She smirked and took the microphone to invite her : “Kaede-chan!  Come over here!”  Extremely embarrassed, Kaede looked all around : she didn’t have a choice and she stood up, walking toward her friend.  She took the microphone, and as she was quite shy, she first mumbled the lyrics until her passion for singing took over and made her gain confidence in herself.  She didn’t care if she wasn’t doing good, what mattered was having fun.  She thought to herself that she should not forget to thank the both of them for making her dare.  Dare to sing.

As always, the days rolled by and she was hanging around with her friends again. Superficial as their relationship might have been, it was the only friendship Miyu had ever known, felt and experienced. And so, she never complained and took it by the hand, enjoying it to the most and spending the less lucky days with a carton of ice cream in her dimly lit pink room. That day, their destination had been the AKB48 Cafe. There was an event being held in it and as it was just outside the Akibahara station where the girls needed to get off at anyway, they decided to check it out. The lines were long but with laughters and jokes, it felt like nothing before they’re finally ushered into the establishment with a cute girl in maid dress.  It was really an AKB48 cafe. There was a small room next to the usual eating place where it was quite dark and another fan told her that that was where the fans could eat while they watch performances played on the big screen from DVDs. And before you go, you could also buy merchandises. There was sparkles in her eyes. Ah, so this is AKB48.  The music played nonstop and people were taking turns on the mic. Miyu clapped along and elevated the atmosphere as she laughed merrily with her friends, her drink laid forgotten on the table. She wouldn’t usually picture her to be having fun in a place like this – some of her friends certainly didn’t look like they enjoyed it. But she was having fun. Perhaps she was letting out the true Miyu after so long. The loser Miyu who’s totally captivated with the sparkles and the melody of the gleaming idol world. Skipping to the center, she took the mic and with her face flushed from excitement and laughter, she started, “Haaaai~~ Then, next, I’ll be singing Labrador Retriever!” And then she did, very happily as she danced along to the music. The cheers from the people around her – people she didn’t even know –made her heart leapt and jumped. It felt good.

“M'telling you now, I’m not going to do anything, you hear me? I’m just going to sit there and eat,” Kuon told his friends slowly and with authority.

How his friends had managed to convince him to visit the AKB48 Cafe’s Open Mic Night was a mystery. Maybe it was because they swore to treat him for his food (Kuon greatly loves food, even more so if it’s free of charge), or maybe deep down he actually liked the cute, pretty and sexy girls of AKB48. Whatever the case, he found himself sitting at the cafe with the rest of his friends, mindlessly listening to the people who went up on stage to perform and clapping in appreciation when they were done.

He picked up his fork and started drawing circles with it on his now empty plate, not paying enough attention to see that his friends had managed to get their hands on a song book and were looking through a list of AKB48 songs enthusiastically. After staring at his plate for far too long, he knew that he was too bored to stay around and so, he spoke out.

“Hey, can I go now? I accompanied you guys already, didn’t I? There’s nothing else for me to do here,” he complained and waved at his friends to catch their attention. However, the guys ignored him as they were busy catching the attention of the MC who was then asking if anyone else wanted to go up on stage. They shouted the title to a song Kuon was surprisingly familiar with (his friends talk a lot) and before he could realize his fate, they had started pushing him forward to the stage.

He protested, of course, with all his might! This may have been one of the rare times he put his 150% into something (besides music and soccer), but his flails and shouting were met with the encouraging cheers and claps of other patrons. His efforts were all in vain and he was soon standing at the center of the stage with a mic in hand. Out in the audience, he noticed a pair of girls and one of them appeared to recognize who he was, probably from his short performances at the bar a couple of stations away. She was excitedly pointing at him and then gushing on to her friend about how she didn’t expect to find Kuon here; in that moment, Kuon felt as though he was dying on the inside.

“There goes my reputation,” he lamented in his mind, but for not there was no time for that. Now was the time to quickly get this done and over with, so he could go back to his table and strangle all of his friends to death. He took a deep breath and not long after, the song “Beginner” played in the background. At that moment, Kuon felt slightly less inclined to whacked his friends because at least they picked a song he was somewhat familiar with. He’s heard them replaying the song time and time again, enough for him to remember at least 80% of the song accurately.

It was quite an upbeat song, not too girly and easy enough for Kuon to not feel too demasculinized which he definitely appreciated. If his friends had chosen a song like “Koisuru Fortune Cookie”, they wouldn’t even have lived to see his performance.

When the song was over, he bowed his head and received the applause, making his way back over to their table and whacking as many of their heads as he could. They shared a good laugh and after the dust settled a bit, he whined.

“Ah~ I want to go home!”

Open Mic Night || Solo

Ever since the AKB48 Center had opened to the public for the vocal lessons, dance lessons, and the makeover and photoshoot, Ame had suddenly taken an interest in whatever the 48 groups were doing. Maybe it was also because Erina, who he would always see as his younger sister even with his real younger sister on the way and who he still felt a bit protective over no matter how old she got, and even more so actually in her current situation, was now in a 48 group as well, but it could also have always been because of his own dreams. After all, they now had a boy group that was still fairly new, and Ame knew that eventually they would be looking for future members, too. His younger brother told him that it would be good for him to familiarize himself with the groups and everything related to them anyway, from the members to their performances to their merchandise to their fans and everything in between also.  

That was why, once again, Ame found himself at a place related to AKB48. With his brother in tow, like before when they went to the AKB48 Center together, they joined in on the fun of the open mic night that was currently going on. It would be happening for a while, but Ame had figured that they might as well get started early, and it was better to do it sooner than later anyway. Sometimes he found it a bit hard to open up and let loose around other people, but with his brother’s urging and the easygoing and friendly vibe of the place, he was able to relax and even step on stage, singing both alone and sometimes with his younger brother or others, too.
