[Voicemail] Hello, I’m calling back from AKS office in relation to the auditions you have passed earlier this month. We have the pleasure to announce that you have been selected to make it to the second round of the auditions. The training camp will be starting in two weeks, in the meantime, you must learn the lyrics to Fantasia Wonderland of MNT48 before the beginning of the camp. Please call us back to let us know if you accept or decline the opportunity. If you have any questions, feel free to also give us a call. Needless, to say that all of this must remain confidential. Any leaked information regarding your acceptance to the second round will constitute a breach of contract and result into your expelling. Congratulations and we hope to hear from you soon.

Whose number was that. She wondered so much about it, but she couldn’t listen to the vocal message yet, she had to wait for classes to end. Some part of her heart felt really excited. She went through auditioning recently and she hoped secretly that they were calling her back. Even more that they would have great news for her. Meaning that she passed the first stage. When the bell rang, she looked painfully at Jun : she felt bad for not going to him, but she was way too curious about that mysterious voice mail.
Her eyes grew bigger when she heard. She made it. Her first move was to first send some sms to Aimi. She was too afraid that she wouldn’t have got the call too. There was no way for Aimi not to be called, Kaede believed she deserved it much more than her. And then, she called back right away. In case she would be too late to be accepted.
“Hello? This is Hayashi Kaede speaking. I received your call about the auditions results. I would like to accept the opportunity, yes thank you.”
She hung up. And couldn’t believe she spoke so calmly.

Kaede felt the anxiety running in her body from head to toe. As soon as they called Aimi’s name, she felt a tight knot tying her belly. She barely ate anything the whole day, knowing she would head right after school for the auditions. And at that moment, she felt a tiny bit jealous of Aimi’s long legs. She thought that if only she were to be a bit taller, she might have more confidence. Even though she worked hard to prepare her audition, she didn’t feel so confident about her talent. She wasn’t bad at singing, better at dancing. But... she knew that her biggest chance to get in was her cute features and her energetic character traits. She felt she didn’t have enough talent to rely only on that. Fortunately, Aimi was right there next to her. Well, now inside giving it all her best. However, Kaede was even too nervous to even be able to cheer for her best friend. She felt bad about it, but the only thing she could think about was : please, let me perform in a decent manner. Please, I beg of you, let me get through the audition. She feared that Aimi and Jina would be recruited but not her. She feared she would be left behind, being the... no good of the group, even if Jun didn’t enjoy his fame. She was afraid to become the only unknown one and be casted aside by her own friends would be too busy to spend time with her. She already kind of felt that way towards her two brothers. She missed them. What would she do without her friends? She needed to succeed.
Sooner than later, Aimi got outside, a smile on her. Kaede couldn’t even feel happy for her friend. She knew her name would be called. She stood up, held tightly Aimi’s hand for a few seconds and walked to the door. She inhaled deeply and went in. Don’t let them seem how nervous I am. Just show them my bubbly character. She smiled. She could do it. She bowed in a cute clumsy manner before introducing herself.
“I’m Hayashi Kaede, 16 years old. I’m happy to be here today, please take care of me! »
Joyful. She made herself sound as joyful as possible. She needed to get points on that. And she would make it clear while singing. She chose a rather cute song because that was what suited her personality best. She carefully chose. She needed something that would match her soft high pitched voice. She couldn’t sing anything. She had potential, but not talent. She pulled it alright. She thought she should have practiced more. She was off pitch maybe once or twice. She felt anger against herself for making those stupid mistake. However, she knew she had to fear nothing when it would come to dance.
She first learned that dance when she was extremely young. She begged Miaka days for her to teach her how to do it, so it had been years she first learnt it, therefore she felt quite confident about this. Her body moved to the song by itself. Sometimes, she changed the movement into something a bit more difficult without even thinking about. Kaede wasn’t only a pretty face. She was a great dancer too. She wouldn’t say that of herself, but her body just moved naturally. She couldn’t stop her grin to grow wider and wider. She loved dancing.
Before she even knew it, it was over and she was out, right in front of Aimi. She jumped at her friend and hugged her tightly before spinning around with her.
“We did it! We did it!” She couldn’t stop laughing. Maybe she wasn’t the best in singing, but she gave her everything and she hoped it would give the results.
Why do you want to be part of MNT48? : Because I like the group, I like that’s only the second generation so that we have to work harder to make ourselves a name.
Do you have a special talent? : I’m pretty good at learning other languages. I already speak fluently Korean and I have good grades in my Chinese classes.
By participating in this audition, what is your final goal? : I hope grow as better person being a MNT48 member. When I’m grown up enough, I wish to pursue a modelling career.

Birthday party ❀ Aimi&Kaede
The best thing about her birthday is that she could always celebrate it at the same time as Kaede’s. It was a long-held tradition by now; even though they both had separate dinners and gifts from their families, when it came to gathering between friends, they’d done it together for as long as Aimi could remember.
This year was different, because their two best friends could not be there. Still, the two girls wanted to do something special for their birthdays, so it ended up being a simple sleepover at her house. They would eat snacks all night long and just fool around. That would be a nice change of scenery after a few months of intense studying!
Aimi had spent a few hours decorating her room before Kaede’s arrival. When her friend got here, she ran downstairs to welcome her and quickly dragged her to her room so she could show what she’d done. As soon as they were far enough to be able to talk privately, Kaede expressed her disapproval towards the twins parents and Aimi could only nod her head in anger. “They’re horrible! I can’t believe they would do this.” She shrugged at the girl’s question. “Neither. In my opinion, money was the reason behind all of it. And now Jun and Jina have to go through that again.”
It was so frustrating to be unable to do anything. Both girls were helpless in this situation, just like the twins in a way. Their hands were tied and they could only wish that it would all go nicely. One thing was for sure, if she never really appreciate Jun’s parents, now she despised them. Thankfully, the conversation quickly took another turn when Kaede showed her the brand new DBSD’s album.
“Eeeeee? You have it already? That’s so great! Let me see, let me see!” She snatched the album from Kaede’s hands excitedly. As expected, they all looked handsome, but the one that caught her attention the most was her brother. Just look at the picture was enough for her cheeks to turn pink. “Can we listen to it now?”
She smiled with some victorious airs. It somehow had many privileges to be the sister of a member of your favorite band. Even more if your best friend happened to be a fan too, so you could share with her. Her grin couldn’t be any wider than that one she would pull out to exhibit that treasure right in front of Aimi’s eyes. She slightly laughed when when she literally pulled it out from her hands to look at it more closely. Kaede exactly knew who she was looking for. No one else than her own brother, which made her feel especially satisfied. If she couldn’t herself be betrothed to him, it was her dear wish that his lovely wife should be Aimi. They would then be real sisters, which was her biggest dream. Though she didn’t need any wedding to treat her as so and to already plan that if they ever had kids, they would be cousins. “I was about to play it before you snatched it away you silly girl! Open it! I’ve got bonus cards in it and of course you know which one is yours!” Since she already had the real one to herself, she gladly gave away most of her goodies featuring him to Aimi. She didn’t mind giving her Haneul’s cards and posters as her own phone was filled with selfies of the both of them.
She couldn’t wait for Aimi to open it and did it for her, taking away the CD to insert it in Aimi’s stereo. The first track was called Confession Song and Kaede loved it. She could imagine all of the boys giving her flowers and everything. Except for Daehyun. She kind of vaguely knew he was not exactly what he seemed to be from what Haneul told her about him. And with Woonjae, he was a bit too old for a girl their age. No need to say she liked Haneul the most. Then... Well she really liked Siwoo, he was Haneul’s best friend and quite the nice guy actually since he spent some time with the family : Haneul would invite him over sometimes too and he would treat Kaede exactly like a princess. However. His voice just came out. And Kaede’s eyes lit up once more. “Don’t you think Shin oppa’s voice got even more beautiful lately? Isn’t he the best of them all! Except for ni-chan, of course!” She blushed. Kaede had lots of crushes. That was natural as she was the quite romantic type of girl. But Lee Shin Hae was another level. He was... the ideal man. His voice made her ecstatic.
“You know I’ve been invited to see nichan in Seoul during the Golden Week? And guess what...” She grinned joyfully. She couldn’t wait for Aimi to guess, she was too happy. “He promised to take me to the dorms and pay a visit to all of them! But that’s not the best!” She grabbed Aimi’s hands and hold them, squeezing them tightly with all that excitement. “If you can, well if you want to and if your parents agree... you’re invited too! Umma is going with me so it will be safe to go. But maybe you have travelling plans with your family too... Anyways, most important is that it’s nichan that told me I should invite you to come. I always talk about you, you know and... oh! It would be so wonderful if we could go together, but I can’t let myself hope to much... In case you can’t.” She was talking so lively, so loudly that she missed all of her favorite part of the song. She covered her mouth and shrugged her shoulders. Aimi knew that when Kaede was excited, she could over do it. She would over do it. And thinking that she could go on a trip with that sweet girl combined to the fact that she would even meet the guy she dreamed of every night was especially thrilling.
Grab a Meal at AKB48 Cafe! ~ Aimi, Jun & Kaede
He only looked away from her when the waitress finally appeared and took their orders. When she left, he picked up the conversation where it was. “Indeed, we need to come back with Jina..” The girl would be so upset to learn about their little outing done without her. “Speaking of Jina… has she told you anything…?” He started, very casually. If she had broke down the news of the show’s new season, he wouldn’t have to do it himself and explain why he would miss their birthday party.
She nodded when they mentioned Jina. “Of course, we need to come back with her! When the waitress was gone, she looked at Kaede to add something. “I’m all for making this a regular thing between the 4 of us!” Shen then turned to Jun. “Don’t worry, it won’t always be here…” She laughed and let the conversation switch to something else. To Jun’s question, she didn’t know what to respond. “Are you talking about something in particular? Nothing specific comes to mind. How about you, Kaede?”
Kaede felt ashamed that she didn’t even think about Jina herself. What was on her mind to forget a part of their team like this? However, deep inside down, she didn’t omit her when she suggested doing such outings more often. It was a given that it would be all the four of them. Nonetheless, she shook her head quite hard to show how much she agreed with including her. There would be no doubt about it. She nodded even more when Aimi suggested to make it a regular thing. When would Kaede actually disagree with Aimi anyways? That was quite a rare thing. If that even happened. Except maybe about guys, but she felt grateful not to share crushes with her. That would be such a mess. Though she would never pursue her friend’s love interest, but she’s seen it in movies : sometimes that kind of stuff doesn’t go as planned. Anyways. That was not a matter by now.
She felt a little surprised by Jun’s words. No. Jina didn’t tell her anything special lately. “I’ve talked with her just yesterday and she didn’t tell me anything somehow different than usual girls’ talk.” She shrugged, not really knowing if she missed out something important. But no matter how much she thought about, nothing out of the ordinary came to her mind. She looked suspiciously at Jun, narrowing her eyes. “Did you do something bad lately so you fear she told us on you? Or did you get a girlfriend? Though you’re not really that kind of guy in my opinion...” She first tried to tease him. Somehow she feared some bad news that could ruin the whole outing.
Birthday party ❀ Aimi&Kaede
Kaede’s mom asked her for the thousandth time if she had everything packed with her. Kaede nodded for the thousandth that she was sure that she’ve got everything. She wasn’t even going to be away for a long time, neither was she actually really as she was only to spend the night at Aimi’s house to celebrate both of their birthdays. However, every time Kaede would set a foot out of the house, her father’s wife would always worry for her, make sure everything’s well. She liked that feeling and she kind of considered her as her mom, even though she wasn’t and couldn’t really replace her real mom. She missed, even more on a day like, when she worked so hard to let the world welcome the small baby she was. It still felt good to be protected and loved with that motherly kind of atmosphere.
The girl and her stepmother finally got in the car. Kaede felt nervous, she hated car rides, even though she knew they were extremely convenient. She just didn’t feel so much safe inside of a car, that’s what it was. It brought back bad memories, but she fought them, so nobody would worry about giving her a ride. Fortunately, Aimi wasn’t living so far away and she quickly ended knocking on the front door before being welcomed by her best friend and her parents. As her stepmom was still talking with her friend’s parents, the two girls went right to Aimi’s room.
“It’s such a pity that Jina and Jun aren’t coming this year! There will be way too much cake for the two of us! Who do you think thought of having the tv show on again? The stinky old man or the witch?” Of course she was talking about Jun and Jina’s parents. She usually didn’t have any problems with them, but she lately kind of hated them. She knew Jun wasn’t so happy with the show on again and that was something she couldn’t forgive them for. “See what I brought!” said she smiling taking out of her bag a CD. DBSD’s latest album, Kaede’s favorite since it was out. Which was basically what happened every time her brother’s boysband released an album. “I got it as a present!” Her favorite birthday present until now.
Open Mic : Kaede-chan, that’s your favorite song!
Kaede was out again with a bunch of friends, heading to the AKB48 Cafe. They didn’t need to convince her to go, she was always eager to have seat over there, get one of those delicious omurice and enjoy the ambiance over there. Moreover she just liked going out with her friends. And it happened she had some maths homework to do and later was always better than sooner. She joyfully ordered her omurice, even though for a tiny second, she thought she might want some shortcake instead, but she didn’t feel for sweets, she felt for something salty. With a nice ketchup drawing. The ketchup was what she liked most. She would always ask for something cute. That she let her friend Okawa-san decide for her which word the waitress would write for her.
She was laughing and talking loudly, quite cheerful. Some people were going up there to sing some AKB48 songs. “Hayashi-chan! Why don’t you go too! You sing quite well!” said Yamamoto, a classmate. She blushed et shook her head. “ No way! I’m not that good and I think I’ve got a little cold and my voice is a little harsh right now.” She coughed a little, just to pretend she felt uncomfortable around throat. He didn’t push any longer for her to sing, but he exchanged a quick look with Okawa and she knew exactly what he meant : as they were best friends, they wouldn’t need to say anything to understand each other and have their way. She stood up, saying she would come back soon, she needed to go to the restrooms.
Kaede was left alone with him. She looked at him with a smile that meant she was ready to tease. “Sooooo.... Yamamoto-kun, have you finally confessed to her? You like Okawa-chan, right!” She lifted an eyebrow and he looked down. “Stop saying nonsense Hayashi-chan... there’s nothing like that between me and Mariya-chan. We are childhood friends, nothing more.” She didn’t believe him. It couldn’t be anything else and she knew her friend also had feelings for him. Well, they were still young, maybe she would finally dare to give him some chocolate on Valentines’ day.
She tilted when she heard her favorite song start up. She lifted her eyes to the small stage to see that Mariya was waving at her and handing the microphone to her. She smirked and took the microphone to invite her : “Kaede-chan! Come over here!” Extremely embarrassed, Kaede looked all around : she didn’t have a choice and she stood up, walking toward her friend. She took the microphone, and as she was quite shy, she first mumbled the lyrics until her passion for singing took over and made her gain confidence in herself. She didn’t care if she wasn’t doing good, what mattered was having fun. She thought to herself that she should not forget to thank the both of them for making her dare. Dare to sing.
15. "Skiwear looks good on you" (Hajimari no yuki)
Kaede looked quite surprised at this stranger that just came to her. She absolutely didn’t know him. Her big eyes grew bigger : how could he say so? She let out a small laughter. That was kind of funny. Dressed like this, she barely look like anything. Scared of the cold, she dressed herself quite warmly, layering clothes. Her appearance was less than pretty, basically she looked like nothing. That’s what it was. Her eyes were barely noticeable under the layers of clothes.
“Thanks! You look great too!” said she, still laughing. As they were both by themselves they got on the cable car together. She didn’t speak much because she felt shy deep inside down, but she couldn’t help but smile to her ears. When they got at the top of the mountain, she waved at him : “Nice to meet you! I’m going down the easy tracks! See you again down there maybe!” She walked away, joining all the kids on the easiest track of the mountain. It was her first time skying.
"I have no luck with the weather" (Love Jump)
Kaede nodded, indeed that was quite the bad luck. All of the snow was slowly melting, leaving the road slushy and dirty. And that was sad because Yuki was wearing those delicious pale brown boots, but with all that dirt, they were slowly turning a darker and more greyish brown. It would take a whole lot of time to make them turn back to their original state and even so… Kaede doubted they would still look brand new.
“Well, I did tell you that you might dirty them but you didn’t listen to me,” said the young girl. She held back a sigh. She well knew that day’s temperature would be a little higher so the snow would melt. Kaede tried to warn the elder girl, but without much success in the end. However, they shouldn’t ruin their outing only for boots.
“Don”t worry, we’ll ask for my mom to clean them, she’s really good at it, Miaka being such a tomboy sometimes.” She tried to make her forget. It didn’t seem to work as well as planned, but at least she did try her best.
“We’ve not been to the zoo in forever, so let’s enjoy it! I’m sure lions and elephants don’t care about what you’re wearing, they won’t say a word about your feet!” She laughed, teasing her. And that worked, making her suddenly join the younger one in her laughter.
"Let's venture into the first snow"
Kaede looked at the girl, quite shocked. She wasn’t quite well dressed to go out so late at night. Wearing her nice Christmas dress and some fine shoes, she thought going outside would make her sick as fast as lightning striking a tree. She was about to tell her all about this when the eldest took her and dragged her along, aiming for the back door. Kaede could see the snow falling through the glass and she couldn’t say that she didn’t want to feel it and touch it.
Once outside, she looked up at the sky and pulled her tongue out, tasting the first snow, as if it was a sweet candy, as if she was still a child. It remembered her of her childhood somehow. She spined around and laughed joyful, her arms wide open by her saide.
“Megumi-chan! Thank you so much for taking me outside! It’s so beautiful!”
Her eyes glittered like diamonds and her smile was the happiest thing on earth for a moment.
“I knew you would enjoy it,” said the other girl with a kind smile. Kaede couldn’t help herself but jump at her and hug her. It was too much happiness to keep it inside.
She turned her out to the door when she heard her father calling her back inside. She chuckled. “Let’s go back before we get sick!” said she as she dragged back inside Megumi, back to the Christmas party. Soon it would be time to exchange gifts.
"You're not useless!"
Kaede looked up at her best friend in the world, trying to hold back her tears. She felt better hearing these words from someone she knew meant them. However, every time she would go and meet with her mother, her real mother, she would feel a little bit down. She wouldn’t remember her mom and she always felt a bit guilty about the accident. Why her mom and not her? She did feel useless when she met her mom. She didn’t even know that Kaede was her own flesh and blood. She couldn’t help but cry silently while Miaka was taking care of her. And somehow, Kaede just felt bad because she considered her father’s new wife as her mom, which Miaka was never able to do. She didn’t feel she was a good daughter.
But she could see in Aimi’s eyes and smile that she didn’t have to blame herself. She was so young when her mom became like this, it’s normal she sought for a motherly figure else where. She wasn’t as fierce as Miaka. She was strong in her manner too, but she had different needs. She bursted into tears and fell in her best friends arms, crying out loud.
“Thanks Aimi! Really thank you, you always make me feel better!”
