The Postal Service Songs & Fic Titles

inspired by this post, I made a graph about how many fics on Ao3 have Postal Service song names in their titles:

Data notes:

The counts are the number of fics on Ao3 that contain the song name somewhere in the title (i.e., the full fic title could include other words in addition to the song name), as of 9/8/2025. I used the Ao3 “Any field” search with the modifier “title:” added, since the “title” field search didn't seem to support exact phrase filtering, for some reason. The counts don't include restricted fics

To be clear, I'm not claiming the counts equal the number of fics named after the songs (especially for the songs with shorter, more generic names) :)

Notably, there’s at least 1 fic on Ao3 with an exact title match for every single song on Give Up except for “Clark Gable”, although there is a single fic that mentions Clark Gable in its title

How much dialogue there is in the mainline Ace Attorney games

I made some graphs about how much dialogue there is across the "mainline" Ace Attorney games (AA1-AA6):

Overall, there's over 1.5 million words of dialogue across the mainline AA games (about 1,570,000 words, by my count)

Data source: I’m using a dataset that I put together pulling from the episode transcripts on the Ace Attorney wiki (which I did almost entirely via Python, but with a bit of manual cleanup). There’s bound to be some error resulting from that process, but the numbers should be pretty close.

How much Franziska von Karma says "fool" in AAI-2 (in graphs)

A while back, I made some graphs about how often Franziska von Karma says “fool” (trilogy graphs; full series graphs), and now that there’s an official translation for AAI-2, I thought it would be interesting to compare how much she says it in the fan version vs the official localization:

Franziska says variations of the word “fool” markedly less in the official English version of AAI2 compared to the fan translation, both in terms of total “fool” count (23 instances in the fan translation vs 16 in the official) as well as the proportion of her lines that include “fool” (6.1% - 7.0% per episode in the fan translation, vs. 1.4% - 2.8% in the official one).

That’s not to say that she’s any gentler with words in the official version—her insults are just a bit more varied. Consider the following dialogue differences (fan translation version listed first, followed by the official localization):

“One good whip deserves another! The scruffy fool gets the whip! Try harder, worthless whipbait!” -> “Spare the whip, spoil the child! A whip in time saves nine! Didn't you go to school, you whipless wonder!?”

“Who is this fool of a man!?” -> “Who is this imbecile!?”

“are you just playing the foolish fool” -> “are you really that air-headed”

“even I feel sorry for that foolish prosecutor” -> “even I feel sorry for the boy now”

“I won't allow any more delays in this trial while we wait for that foolish man to return.” -> “But justice can't sit around waiting for him to grow a spine!”

“That foolish prosecutor” -> “That IDIOT of a so-called prosecutor!”

“The next time I see that foolish fool of a prosecutor, I'll whip some backbone into him!” -> “The next time I see the little coward, I'll whip him into shape if it's the last thing I do!”

Also, I feel like it’s worth mentioning nearly half of her “fool” count in the official translation is concentrated in this single line:

What places have the happiest bird names

One of my favorite things about birds is that a bunch of them have delightfully upbeat-sounding names, like consider these gems:

I got curious whether certain regions might have more happy-named kinds of birds than others, so I (naturally) crunched the numbers and made some graphs about it:

Bird name and (breeding) location data is from the AvianLexiconAtlas. To find “happy” species names, I ran all bird species’ common English names through the VADER sentiment analysis tool, and filtered the list to species with a nonzero “positive” score. Then, I manually reviewed that list and excluded ones that didn’t fit what I was going for. In particular, I excluded species that were only flagged for including the term “great”/”greater” (very subjective of course, but to me, such names read in context as obviously referring to the birds’ size, and I wanted names that to a layperson feel more like complimentary descriptions), a bunch of swift species (since “swift” feels too situationally positive to me), and some herons that I have no idea why they were initially flagged in the first place.

Here's the full list of what I categorized as “happy” bird names (also available in Google Sheets here):

The South American numbers are heavily bolstered by my decision to include the various species of “brilliants”, which I was a bit on the fence about, since they are the only ones where the positive aspect is coming from the noun part of the name rather than the adjective. If you take out those names, South America drops to just 16 happily-named birds (still 2nd-most, but giving Australia a decisive lead), or 5.1 / thousand bird names when standardized (6th-most, just behind Eurasia).

This post was partially inspired by this post about fairywren species names and partially inspired by my observation that hummingbird species tend to have adorable fairy names. I originally wanted to look at whether tropical birds have more cheery names compared to non-tropical birds (with the expectation that hummingbird names would pump up those tropical numbers), but getting the “tropical” vs non classification was going to be a ridiculous amount of work with the data I could find, and hummingbirds ended up being a much smaller part of this list than I expected anyway, so my prediction that tropical regions have happier bird names likely wouldn’t have panned out regardless.
